If you’re having trouble with your DNS records and Amazon WorkMail not recognizing your autodiscover setup, don’t worry—that’s a common situation and usually easy to fix.
When setting up records in Cloudflare, you might see just “autodiscover” instead of “autodiscover.yourdomain.com.” This is completely normal because DNS providers like Cloudflare automatically add your domain name in the background. So, entering “autodiscover” creates “autodiscover.yourdomain.com,” which is exactly what you need.
If your DNS lookup (such as with the ‘dig’ command) shows that the record points correctly to Amazon’s autodiscover endpoint, then your configuration is correct. The CNAME record should be properly set up and resolving properly.
The main issue is probably due to DNS propagation delays. Changes to DNS records don’t happen instantly everywhere—they take some time to spread across the internet and for services to recognize them. Amazon WorkMail also needs to perform its own DNS checks, which can sometimes cache old data or take a little longer.
Here are some simple steps to improve the chances of Amazon detecting your records:
- Give it a little more time. DNS propagation can take several hours, so patience often helps.
- In the Amazon WorkMail console, look for a refresh or retry button. Clicking this can ask Amazon to recheck the DNS records immediately.
- Make sure your DNS records are set with a suitable TTL (time-to-live). For autodiscover records, 3600 seconds (or 1 hour) is a good setting because it balances quick updates with server load.
Since your DNS lookups show the record is correctly resolving, your setup is correct on Cloudflare’s side. Keep in mind that the interface shows “autodiscover” instead of the full domain name, but this is just a display thing and doesn’t affect the setup.
If after waiting some hours and refreshing the verification on Amazon’s side you still see issues, the record should eventually be recognized once all DNS changes have fully propagated. patience and rechecking are key.
