If you’re wondering whether AKS Automatic can run in the westus region, here’s what you need to know. I recently tried to create an AKS cluster with automatic node management in westus using this command:
bash
az aks create –name westusplz –location westus –resource-group my-rg –sku automatic
Unfortunately, I received an error message saying:
“AKS Automatic could not find a suitable VM size. The subscription may not have the required quota of 16 vCPUs, or the region may not support three availability zones for certain VM sizes.”
Even though my subscription had more than enough quota for Standard D* VM types (checking with az vm list-usage --location westus --output table showed over 100 for most types), the error persisted. This suggests that the problem isn’t quota but rather regional support.
I also tried including specific availability zones (--zones 1,2 and --zones 1) in my command, hoping that would bypass the issue, but the error remained the same. This indicates that AKS Automatic may not be supported in westus at this time, especially if the region doesn’t support the necessary VM sizes across the required availability zones.
Currently, there’s no clear, publicly available list of regions that support AKS Automatic. Since the feature recently went fully GA, it’s possible that regional support is still expanding. To avoid this issue, consider deploying AKS without the automatic node management or use a different supported region where the feature is available.
If you want to check the latest supported regions for AKS Automatic, keep an eye on official Microsoft documentation or the Azure updates page. These sources are regularly updated and will offer the most accurate guidance on where this feature is available.
