If your HP Envy laptop is functioning normally or has completely frozen, here are some simple ways to restart it.
If your mouse and screen are still working, you can restart the laptop through the Windows menu. Just click on the Start menu, then the power icon, and select Restart. It’s a quick and safe way to reset your laptop without losing any data.
If your mouse is acting slow or unresponsive, using keyboard shortcuts can come to the rescue. You can press Windows Key + X to open the power menu, then press U followed by R to restart. Alternatively, pressing Ctrl + Alt + Delete will bring up an options screen, where you can tab to the Power icon in the bottom right, press Enter, and choose Restart. You can also try pressing Alt + F4 on the desktop; this opens the shutdown menu where you can select Restart with the arrow keys and hit Enter.
Sometimes, your laptop might be completely unresponsive, and the shortcuts won’t work. In this case, a force shutdown is needed. Press and hold the power button for about 10 to 15 seconds. The screen will go black, and all lights will turn off. After waiting for around five seconds, press the power button again to turn your laptop back on.
If your device is acting glitchy—like WiFi problems or battery charging issues—you can try a hard reset. First, unplug your charger and remove any USB devices. Then, press and hold the power button continuously for 30 seconds; even if it turns off after 10 seconds, keep holding for the full time. Afterward, reconnect the charger and turn the laptop on normally.
Pro tip: If your screen is black but you can still hear the fans running, press Windows Key + Ctrl + Shift + B. This command resets your graphics driver without needing to restart the whole system and often fixes frozen screens.
When it’s time for a full factory reset, whether you can log into Windows or not, there are steps to follow. Before starting, always plug in your charger to prevent power loss during the process, which can cause data corruption. Also, back up your important files if you plan to remove everything, as this will erase all your data.
If you can log in to Windows, a safe reset option is through Settings. For Windows 11, go to Settings, then System, then Recovery. Click on Reset this PC and choose to keep your files or remove everything. Follow the instructions on the screen. For Windows 10, the steps are similar: go to Settings, then Update & Security, Recovery, and click Get Started under Reset this PC.
If you’re locked out and can’t access Windows, try the F11 startup method. Turn off your laptop completely. Then, press the power button and start tapping F11 repeatedly (about once a second). When the choose an option screen appears, select Troubleshoot, then Reset this PC. You can choose to keep or remove your files, and select Local Reinstall if prompted, to speed up the process.
I hope these tips help you restart or reset your HP Envy easily. If this advice solves your issue, please mark it as the solution. Thank you!
