If you’re using Amazon Bedrock and wondering how billing works now that access to serverless models is simplified, here’s what you need to know. Even though Amazon has made it easier to access models like Claude without needing to visit the Model Access page, the billing process for these models hasn’t changed.
Claude models from Anthropic, such as Claude 3.5 Sonnet and Claude 3 Sonnet, are still billed through AWS Marketplace. On your invoice, they will appear as “sold by Anthropic, PBC.” This means that, despite the easier access, the charges for these third-party models stay the same and are handled through the marketplace, just like before.
In contrast, Amazon’s native models, like Titan Text Premier, are now billed directly as part of your overall Bedrock service charges. You’ll see these costs integrated into your regular AWS billing.
It’s important to understand this difference because AWS credits usually can’t be used for AWS Marketplace purchases. So, if you’re using Claude models, you can’t apply credits directly to reduce those costs—they’ll be billed through the marketplace as usual.
For teams that manage models via AWS Marketplace, the administrator with the right permissions can enable access for all users within the account. Once this is done, individual users can invoke the models without needing marketplace permissions. However, this process doesn’t impact how the models are billed—they still appear on your marketplace invoice.
In summary, improved access doesn’t mean a change in billing methods. If you’re using third-party models like Claude, you’ll continue to be billed through AWS Marketplace. Native Amazon models will be billed directly as part of your standard Bedrock costs.
