I’ve previously discussed utilizing apps to combat procrastination, but I haven’t touched on my frequent forgetfulness. If I can’t find an item, it’s often because my partner moved it, but more commonly, I simply put it down absentmindedly, got distracted, and forgot its location.
Losing something usually means I won’t be able to recover it easily. This is a real problem with my valuable devices, especially my Jabra Elite 8 Active wireless earbuds stored in a tiny case—one that I worry I might misplace someday. I really hope that doesn’t happen, considering their high price.
To prevent this, I rely on a small Bluetooth tracker. There are many options available, but the one I prefer is the one I use and recommend.
The main purpose of a Tile Bluetooth tracker is to help locate objects it’s attached to—be it keys, a laptop, or a tiny earbuds case. All I need to do is open the Tile app, press the “Find” button, and it plays a small tune, similar to keygen music. When my earbuds go missing, I first search around for a bit; if I can’t find them, I take out my phone, and I can pinpoint their location within seconds.
What sets this tracker apart is its adhesive backing, unlike the typical keyring models many are familiar with. While those are effective for tracking items with hooks or straps, I prefer this one because it sticks to all sorts of objects, like my earbuds case, which has no loops or hooks.
I used an earlier version of Tile’s adhesive tracker for several years, but the battery eventually died. I recently ordered the latest model, which offers similar, if not better, features based on the specs. However, I’m not a fan of the new features resulting from Tile’s merger with Life360, including constant location tracking and invasive family monitoring.
Tile recommends enabling continuous location sharing, regardless of whether the app is active, to alert you when you’re far from your device or if it’s left at home. You can also use it to locate your tile if misplaced. I personally am not interested in these functionalities, nor in the family tracking, SOS features, or creating “circles” with friends.
Despite having to deal with frequent permission prompts, I only need to use the app about once a week. That’s manageable. What I truly can’t do without is my wireless earbuds, and thanks to my sticky Tile tracker, I’m confident I’ll never lose them again.
