If you’re looking to upgrade your VPN gateway from Basic to Standard SKU, there’s good news—you might not need to do a full teardown or experience significant downtime. Here’s a simple way to approach this process:
First, check if your VPN Gateway is currently set to the Standard SKU. If it is, verify if the public IP associated with it is set to dynamically allocate and that this IP is currently linked to a Basic SKU VPN Gateway.
In the gateway settings, look for the option labeled “Migrate to Standard IP.” This feature is designed to help you upgrade your VPN gateway to the Standard SKU without changing the public IP address. When you choose this option, the migration will take care of switching your gateway to the higher SKU while keeping your existing public IP intact.
Because the public IP remains the same during this process, your IPsec tunnels should stay connected without interruption, reducing downtime and avoiding the need to reconfigure your VPN connections. This makes the migration smoother and faster.
Before proceeding, make sure to review any current configurations and backups, just in case. It’s always good to double-check that your setup aligns with the supported scenarios for this migration feature.
Once you’re ready, select “Migrate to Standard IP” in the VPN gateway settings, follow the prompts, and wait for the process to complete. Your gateway will now be upgraded to the Standard SKU while retaining the same public IP and tunnel stability.
