Even if you’re using AWS Free Tier resources, there are a few reasons you might still see charges. Understanding these can help you manage your account better and prevent unexpected costs.
First, it’s important to stay within the Free Tier limits. The EC2 Free Tier offers 750 hours each month of t2.micro or t3.micro instances, depending on your region. If you run more instances than allowed or operate in multiple regions (since limits are combined across regions), you’ll be charged for the extra usage.
Next, check the type of instances you’re using. Typically, t2.micro instances are covered under the Free Tier, but t3.micro instances may not be eligible everywhere. Confirm that you’re using the correct instance type for your region.
Also, keep in mind that the Free Tier for EC2 is available for the first 12 months after creating your account. If your account is older than a year, charges are applied for all EC2 usage, regardless of the Free Tier.
Another common source of charges can be associated resources. Even if your EC2 instance qualifies for Free Tier, you could still be billed for services like certain EBS volumes (standard types), Elastic IP addresses (not attached to a running instance), data being transferred beyond free limits, NAT Gateways, or EBS snapshots. These add-ons are usually billed separately.
If your instances are restarting automatically, it may be due to Auto Scaling configurations or recovery settings. Monitoring your instance behavior can help identify and fix these issues to avoid unexpected charges.
To keep track of your Free Tier status and avoid surprises, regularly check your AWS Billing Dashboard. Confirm that you’re only using resources eligible under the Free Tier, terminate any unused instances (be sure to delete them completely, not just stop), and set up billing alerts or AWS Budgets. These notifications can warn you before you go over your free limits.
If you see charges that seem incorrect, you can reach out to AWS Support through the Support Center. They can help review your account and clarify any billing questions.
Staying mindful of these points can help you enjoy AWS’s Free Tier benefits without unwelcome surprises on your bill.
