A few weeks prior to my appearance on This Week in Tech’s Windows Weekly podcast, the studio engineer complimented my microphone and webcam setup, noting that my lighting looked excellent. I mentioned I was using a ring light, and he responded, “I can tell.”
Achieving a professional appearance relies heavily on lighting, not just on your webcam quality. Proper illumination can elevate your video from looking amateurish to polished. While natural light can be ideal, it’s often unpredictable due to shifting sunlight, cloudiness, and weather conditions. Even in a well-lit room, standard lamps might not provide enough brightness on your face.
The most effective solution is a ring light, thanks to its affordability, simplicity, and adaptability regardless of your setup. You don’t need complex AI lighting effects, reconfigure your workspace, or invest in expensive AV gear.
I bought a 5-inch Neewer ring light from Amazon for roughly $15—price varies with sales and discounts—and it proved to be a worthwhile investment. It operates through USB, so I just plug it into my computer or any USB charger. It comes with a remote control on the cable that manages brightness and color warmth, and it retains those settings between uses. Once set up to my satisfaction, I only need to press the power button to activate or deactivate it.
This ring light also includes a portable desktop stand and features a ball joint for flexible angle adjustments. Alternatively, you can clip it onto your monitor or laptop screen if you prefer not to use the stand. I prefer the stand because it allows me to position the light slightly to the side and avoid direct glare into my eyes.
As a glasses wearer, I initially noticed the ring light’s reflection in my lenses, which I found undesirable. To address this, I purchased a Neewer light stand for about $25, enabling me to mount the light above eye level. Angling the light downward results in softer, more natural illumination and minimizes reflections.
The setup is straightforward: a high-quality microphone, a 4K webcam, and an affordable ring light. Whether you’re in online meetings, recording YouTube content, or streaming live, good lighting significantly enhances your appearance. I can personally attest to this improvement.
Compared to my earlier appearance on Windows Weekly filmed in a basement with fluorescent lighting and no ring light, the difference is clear, despite using the same webcam. The comparison below demonstrates how much lighting influences video quality.
