If your laptop isn’t starting up and gets stuck when you turn it on, it can be frustrating. Sometimes, formatting the hard drive and reinstalling the operating system is the best way to fix these issues. Here’s a simple guide to help you through the process.
First, you’ll want to back up any important data if possible. Once you’ve done that, you can proceed with formatting your drive. To do this safely, you’ll need a bootable USB drive or DVD with the Windows 10 installation files. You can create this using another working computer by downloading the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool from Microsoft’s official website.
After you’ve created the installer, insert the USB or DVD into your problematic laptop and restart it. You might need to change the boot order in your BIOS settings to make sure your computer boots from the USB or DVD first. This usually involves pressing a key like F2, F12, or DEL as your computer starts up—check your laptop’s manual if unsure.
When the Windows setup screen appears, choose your language and preferences, then click “Next.” Click on “Install Now,” and you’ll be prompted to enter a product key. If your laptop came with Windows 10 pre-installed, it likely has a digital license attached to the hardware, so you can usually click “I don’t have a product key” and proceed.
Next, select “Custom: Install Windows only (advanced).” This option allows you to delete the existing partitions on your drive, effectively formatting it. Be sure to select the primary drive, usually labeled as Drive 0, and delete all partitions there. Once the drive is unallocated space, select it and click “Next.” The installation process will then begin, and your computer will restart a few times.
As for reinstalling Windows 10 Home, if your laptop originally came with it, you can download the installation files directly from Microsoft’s website as part of creating your bootable media. Since your license is tied to your hardware, you shouldn’t need to enter a new key if you reinstall the same edition.
Once the installation completes, follow the on-screen prompts to set up Windows. After that, your laptop should be fresh, clean, and ready to use. Remember, always keep your important data backed up and use a trusted source for your OS installation files to avoid issues.
