If your Wi-Fi connection keeps dropping on your Windows computer, especially after recent updates, you’re not alone. I experienced this issue myself and found a solution that worked.
After installing updates in the summer—especially the system update and new drivers for the processor and network card—the Wi-Fi started acting up. It would disconnect randomly, sometimes when I was downloading files or streaming data. Interestingly, other devices like phones and smart TVs kept behaving normally, so the problem seemed isolated to my computer.
At first, I thought tweaking the Wi-Fi settings, like MTU and packet size, might help. I even reset these to default, but the problem persisted. The Wi-Fi would sometimes freeze and then shut off completely. When this happened, I could reconnect, but it was like the Wi-Fi service itself had turned off. One particularly frustrating moment was when the Wi-Fi disconnected while I was downloading a game on Steam, and it also caused Bluetooth to disconnect.
The trick is to update or rollback your network drivers. If recent updates caused the problem, going back to a previous driver version often fixes it. You can do this by going to Device Manager, finding your network adapter, right-clicking it, and choosing “Update driver” or “Roll back driver.” If you choose rollback, select a version of the driver from before the updates.
If that doesn’t work, you might also try resetting your network settings completely. To do this, open Command Prompt as administrator and run these commands:
netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
After restarting your computer, check if the Wi-Fi is more stable.
Also, ensure that your Windows is fully updated after rolling back drivers, as this can fix known bugs. If all else fails, consider reinstalling your network drivers from the manufacturer’s website.
This process helped me regain a stable Wi-Fi connection, and I hope it will help you too. Keep in mind that updates can sometimes cause issues, but with a few tweaks, you can usually fix the problem without too much hassle.
