Are you using the Microsoft Authenticator App for your Microsoft account? Do you have AutoFill Passwords and Passkeys enabled in your web browsers and on iCloud Keychain? And finally, are you signed up for a passwordless account with Microsoft? If you answered “yes” to all three questions, you may have run into an error when trying to log in. You might see an AutoFill Passkey in the sign-in box, along with a message in red that says: “We couldn’t use your device to verify your identity. Enter your password to sign in.”
This problem happens because your browser has stored a password or passkey for your account, but your Microsoft account is set up to use two-factor authentication (2FA). The solution is to adjust your account settings so that only two-factor authentication is used, which helps prevent conflicts. For a more straightforward and user-friendly process, it’s best to do this using a Mac.
Before beginning, make sure you’re signed into the same Apple ID on all your devices and that Passwords is turned on in iCloud Settings—in this way, everything will sync properly.
Here’s what you need to do step by step:
-
Remove any saved passwords or passkeys from your Mac’s browsers and from iCloud Keychain. To do this, visit the Apple support page on Managing Passwords here.
-
Sign in to your Microsoft account at account.microsoft.com.
-
Delete the password from your Microsoft account. You can find this option in the account’s security settings, or follow instructions provided on Microsoft’s support page here.
-
Enable passwordless sign-in for your Microsoft account. This option is also available in your account settings or on the same Microsoft support page mentioned above here.
-
Log out from your account. Visit Microsoft’s logout link.
-
Finally, sign back in to your Microsoft account via account.microsoft.com.
Following these steps should resolve the login issues related to stored passwords and passkeys conflicting with your two-factor authentication setup. Ensuring the account’s security settings are correctly configured will make signing in smoother and keep your device verification process seamless.
