If you’re trying to add diacritics to Arabic letters using your iOS device, here’s a simple guide to help you do it easily.
On an iPhone, it’s straightforward. Locate the special key just to the right of the Space bar—this key has the Tanwin Fatha (ً) symbol on it. Press and hold this key, and a small menu will pop up with different diacritics you can add to your letter. Simply tap the diacritic you want, and it will be added directly. Usually, just tapping this key will automatically insert the Tanwin Fatha if it’s the default.
However, if you’re using an iPad with iOS 26 or later, the process is a bit different. While the special key still shows the Tanwin Fatha symbol, tapping it won’t bring up the same menu. Instead, the popup menu will temporarily highlight the Shaddah, and the default diacritic is now the Shaddah. To type the Tanwin Fatha on an iPad, you need to swipe down on the special key instead of just tapping it. This action will produce the Tanwin Fatha diacritic.
Using these simple gestures, you can easily add the correct diacritics to Arabic letters on your iPhone or iPad, making your typing smoother and more accurate.
