If your hp 15-af131dx laptop’s cursor is moving in jerky, uneven motions on Windows 11, don’t worry—you’re not alone. It can be frustrating when the trackpad seems to be calling for movement constantly, but the cursor only responds intermittently. Luckily, there are some simple steps you can try to fix this issue.

First, check your trackpad settings. Sometimes, the sensitivity settings can cause cursor movement problems. Go to Settings > Devices > Touchpad and adjust the sensitivity and other settings such as “Scroll and zoom” and “Taps.” Make sure everything’s set properly and test the cursor again.

Next, update or reinstall your touchpad driver. Sometimes, drivers can become buggy or outdated, even after updates. Visit your laptop manufacturer’s website, find the latest driver for your model, and install it. If you already have the latest driver, try uninstalling it via Device Manager (Right-click on Start > Device Manager > Mice and other pointing devices), then restart your laptop to reinstall the driver automatically.

Disable any third-party software that might interfere with touchpad functionality. Some utility programs are known to cause cursor lag, so temporarily turning them off can help identify if they’re the cause.

Check your system for background processes. Excessive tasks or high CPU/memory usage can make your cursor feel unresponsive. Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and see if anything is consuming a lot of resources. If so, close those programs to free up system power.

Perform a system scan for malware or viruses. Sometimes, malicious software can cause strange system behavior, including cursor issues. Run a full scan with your trusted antivirus before making further adjustments.

Since you’ve already replaced hardware components and tried resets, this points toward software or driver issues. Also, check your system for Windows updates—keeping your OS updated often resolves hidden bugs.

If none of these steps help, consider restoring your system to an earlier point when the cursor was smooth, or performing a clean install of Windows as a last resort.

While there’s no one-size-fits-all solution, these steps address common causes of cursor lag and responsiveness issues on Windows laptops. With a bit of patience, you should be able to get your cursor moving smoothly again.
