How to Fix Azure Student Subscription Region Error

If you’re trying to create a Function App but run into permission issues, here’s a simple guide to help you get everything set up correctly.

The problem often comes down to permissions. Specifically, your account needs the right-level access to register resource providers or create Function App resources. If you only have a Contributor or Owner role at the resource group level, that’s usually not enough to perform all necessary actions.

What you need is for someone with Owner or User Access Administrator rights at the subscription level to grant you Contributor or Owner access. Once they do that, you should refresh your credentials and try again.

Here’s what you should do:

  1. Ask the person managing the subscription to give you the right permissions. They should go to the Azure portal, navigate to the “Subscriptions” section, select the subscription in question, and then go to “Access control (IAM).”

  2. From there, they need to click on “Add role assignment.”

  3. In the role assignment menu, choose either Owner or Contributor from the list of roles.

  4. Assign this role to your user account, a group you belong to, or a service principal.

If you’re not authorized to assign roles yourself, reach out to someone who is an Owner or User Access Administrator and ask them to do this for you.

Once your permissions are updated, log out and then log back into your account. After that, try creating the Function App again. With the correct permissions, this process should go smoothly.

Remember, actions like registering a resource provider, which are needed for creating Function Apps, only work at the subscription level. So, ensuring you have the right access there is key.

If you need detailed steps on how to add these permissions, here’s a quick guide:

  • Log in to the Azure portal.
  • Navigate to “Subscriptions.”
  • Select your subscription.
  • Click on “Access control (IAM).”
  • Click “Add role assignment.”
  • Pick “Owner” or “Contributor.”
  • Choose your user account or group and save.

If you don’t have permission to do this yourself, ask the person who manages the subscription to help.

Hopefully, this makes the process clear and easy to follow. If you need more help or have other questions, just ask.
