If you’ve run into an error with Amazon S3 Batch Operations, you’re not alone. This issue happens because Batch Operations doesn’t support object keys that contain line feed (\n) or carriage return (\r) characters, even if they’re URL-encoded.

To fix this problem, there are a few straightforward steps you can take:

First, look at your object keys and replace any special characters, like line feeds or carriage returns, with their proper XML entity codes. It’s also important to make sure your object names follow Amazon S3’s naming rules.

Second, ensure all your object keys are correctly URL encoded. However, keep in mind that URL encoding alone won’t solve the issue if your object keys contain line feeds or carriage returns, since those characters aren’t supported by Batch Operations.

Third, consider breaking up your transfer job into smaller parts. Focus each job on objects that have acceptable key formats, excluding those with problematic characters.

If some objects still fail during copying, you might need to try alternative solutions. AWS DataSync is a great option for large data transfers between S3 buckets, whether within the same account or across accounts. Alternatively, you can develop a custom script using the AWS SDK to handle these tricky objects separately.

Before launching your full production data migration, review the completion report from your batch job. This report details which objects failed and why, so you can tackle those specific issues one by one.

Keep in mind that Amazon S3 limits the number of task failures in Batch Operations. If more than half of your tasks fail after 1,000 attempts, the entire job will stop. Planning ahead can help avoid this.

For more detailed guidance, you can refer to the official troubleshooting documentation, AWS community discussions, and the page on tracking job status and completion reports.
