Ten years ago, a typical savvy driver kept jumper cables and a tire patch kit in their trunk. Today, in 2025, I’ve shifted to carrying two affordable yet vital gadgets instead.
I now equip each vehicle with a portable, battery-powered jump starter along with a separate portable air compressor, also powered by batteries, to handle leaky tires. Remarkably, some forward-thinking brands now merge both functionalities into a single compact device.
Experiencing a dead battery can be stressful at best, or life-threatening if it happens in a remote area with no cell service. A portable car jump starter supplies enough power from its small battery pack to start your vehicle, using short cables to connect with your battery terminals.
It’s important to note that not all portable jump starters are universal. Larger engines demand more power. Many models are rated for specific engine sizes; for example, the Scatach 011 jump starter (currently 47% off at $36.99 on Amazon) is suitable for engines up to 9.0 liters. I prefer units with “spark-proof” reverse polarity protection, which prevents sparks or discharges even if cables are connected incorrectly. Most of these devices, including this one, also come with a flashlight or additional features.

(Beware of claims that these jump starters can handle dozens of jumps. The ZEVSO model, currently 37% off at $58.99 on Amazon, requires a full charge to revive a dead battery. Additionally, it features ports for charging your phone, allowing you to inform family or friends of your location during an emergency.)
The second device I find invaluable is a portable, battery-powered air compressor. Residing on a hill where my driveway tilts, I’ve noticed slow leaks worsen over time. While I can refill tires for free in California, service station gauges aren’t always precise.
I purchased an Avid portable air compressor last year for $89.99, and it has been a great investment. Currently, it’s on sale at Amazon for $56.08, offering a 38% discount.
This compressor can be powered via your vehicle’s cigarette lighter socket or its built-in rechargeable battery. It features a digital display to set your desired PSI. Simply connect the inflator, hit the button, and it automatically fills the tire to your chosen pressure, then turns off. It’s versatile enough to inflate sports balls and inflatables, making it a simple, cost-effective tool.

I wasn’t aware of a new trend of hybrid “combo” devices that combine a portable jump starter and air compressor into one unit. Several options are available, with the VTOMAN X1 (currently 34% off at $66.49 on Amazon) being the most popular. It offers all the features of separate units, but some users note it can overheat if used extensively and repeatedly — VTOMAN recommends letting it cool between sessions.
If you’re hesitant about that, reputable brands also offer high-end models: a DeWalt DXAEPS14 for $199 or a Stanley J5C09, on sale at $117.52, which connects via extension cord.
Whichever you choose, make it a habit to check their charge status periodically by turning them on and verifying the display. After using the jump starter, recharge it immediately. These devices can save you hours of waiting for roadside assistance, which makes them an excellent investment for your vehicles and a must-have in any emergency kit.
