Ten years ago, savvy drivers always kept jumper cables and a tire patch kit in their trunks. Now, in 2025, I’ve replaced those with two essential and affordable gadgets.
Every vehicle I own is equipped with a portable, battery-powered jump starter along with a separate compact battery-powered air compressor perfect for fixing flat tires. Some forward-thinking manufacturers even combine both devices into a single, multifunctional unit.
Having a dead battery can cause frustration at best and can be dangerous if it happens in a remote location with no cellphone signal. A portable car charger offers enough energy stored in a small battery pack to get you moving again, with short cables that connect easily to your car’s battery terminals.
Not all portable jump starters are the same. Larger engines demand more power. Most models are designed for specific engine sizes; for example, the Scatach 011 jump starter, currently available at a 47 percent discount for $36.99 on Amazon, supports engines up to 9.0 liters in gasoline. I prioritize models with “spark-proof” reverse polarity protection, which prevent sparks or discharges if cables are attached incorrectly. Many of these, like this one, also include handy features such as built-in flashlights.

(Be cautious about claims that these jump starters can handle dozens of jumps. The Zevso model, now available at 37 percent off for $58.99 on Amazon, requires a full charge to revive a dead battery. It also features ports for charging smartphones, so you can inform loved ones of your situation.)
The second gadget I find indispensable is a portable, battery-powered air compressor. Living on a hill with a slightly sloped driveway causes slow leaks to worsen over time. While refilling tires is free in California, the gauges at service stations aren’t always accurate.
I purchased this Avid portable air compressor last year for $89.99, and it has proven to be a worthwhile investment. It’s currently on sale for $56.08 on Amazon, reflecting a 38 percent discount.
The beauty of this device is its dual power source: it can operate off your car’s 12V “cigarette lighter” outlet or on its built-in rechargeable battery. It also allows you to set your desired PSI with a digital display. Simply connect the inflator, press the trigger, and it automatically inflates the tire to your preset pressure—then turns off. Plus, it can inflate sports balls and inflatables using the included nozzles. Efficient, user-friendly, and economical—just what I want in such a tool.

I wasn’t aware of a new trend of hybrid devices combining both a portable battery charger and air compressor in one unit. Several options are available, with the VTOMAN X1 being among the most popular—offered at 34 percent off for $66.49 on Amazon. This device delivers all the features of separate units but beware of reports that it may overheat if used extensively; VTOMAN suggests waiting for it to cool down between uses.
If comfort is key, well-known brands like DeWalt’s DXAEPS14, priced at $199, and Stanley’s J5C09, on sale for $117.52 with an extension cord, provide premium options.
Regardless of which device you choose, remember to periodically check that they are fully charged by activating a simple button. After jumpstarting your vehicle, recharge the device as soon as possible. While calling AAA or asking a neighbor for help is always an option, these gadgets can get you back on the road quickly without waiting for a tow. They’re a worthwhile addition to any automotive toolkit and highly recommended for your vehicle.
