Hello, PC enthusiasts! I’ve been utilizing a handy tool called Steps Recorder in both Windows 10 and 11 for quite some time. Essentially, it captures a problem and provides a step-by-step visual guide to resolve it. I’ve found it incredibly effective when demonstrating to family members how to navigate through various Windows settings without the need for lengthy explanations.

They’re always amazed by it, but honestly, it’s quite straightforward. You can access Steps Recorder by simply typing “Steps Recorder” into Windows Search. However, there’s a catch—this feature is gradually being phased out, prompting me to transition to the recording capability found in the Windows Snipping Tool.

You can use this tool similarly to document solutions for troubleshooting issues with family or colleagues, or even to capture something interesting you’re doing on your PC that you want to share. Here’s a quick guide on how to use it:

How to Use It:

  • Start by typing Snipping into Windows Search and select the Snipping Tool to open it.
  • Next, press Windows Key + Shift + R or click New to choose the area of your screen that you want to record. For demonstrating any settings changes in Windows, it’s best to select the entire screen for clarity.
  • A control box will pop up at the top of your screen. Click “Start” to initiate recording, which will begin after a brief countdown.
  • Go ahead and make the settings adjustments you want to showcase in the recording, or start any other activity you want to capture.
  • To stop recording, simply click the stop button. Don’t forget to save your file in an easily accessible location.

Pro Tip: If you’re demonstrating settings changes or other essential tips in your videos, consider practicing beforehand or preparing a checklist of settings to include. This preparation will make your video clearer and more straightforward for viewers.

That wraps up this quick tip! If you’d like to receive more helpful insights like this directly in your inbox twice a week, don’t forget to subscribe to our Try This newsletter.
