I understand—your Gmail username from a decade ago probably seemed fine back then. In those days, internet trends were different, and choosing a quirky, funny, or random email address didn’t seem problematic. However, sharing that old username now can feel uncomfortable. When someone asks why you still use it, your response might evoke some secondhand embarrassment or regret.
Fortunately, you no longer have to stick with that outdated username. Gmail now allows you to update and change your old username, giving you the chance to pick something fresh—whether it’s more professional, mature, or just plain cooler, reflecting the person you’ve become.
Step-by-step guide to update your Gmail username
To start, open the Gmail app on your phone or access the desktop version on your computer. Then, click or tap your profile icon and select Manage your Google Account from the dropdown menu. From there, navigate to the Personal Info section.
Once there, you’ll be able to update your email address with a few simple steps. Follow the on-screen instructions to change your old Gmail username to a new one. It’s a straightforward, guided process that helps ensure you don’t get lost along the way.
A quick note: currently, this feature is only available for users in the United States. Google has not announced when it plans to roll out to other regions, so for now, it appears limited to U.S. users.
Give your Gmail account a fresh new look
Thanks to this update, managing your online identity just got easier. No more clinging to an outdated username that no longer fits your personality or professional image. Changing it can give your Gmail a much-needed refresh, making your account feel relevant and confident.
While this feature is restricted to U.S. users for now, hopefully, it will be available worldwide soon. I’m excited to update my own Gmail username and give it the upgrade it deserves.
