If you visit a question thread in the community, you’ll see the original question at the top. This is the first post in the conversation.
Below that, sometimes there is a reply that has been automatically chosen as the “Top-ranking reply.” If such a reply exists, it will appear directly under the original question.
Below the top reply, you’ll notice a horizontal line. Just below that line, on the far right, you’ll see a “sort by:” option with a label next to it. This allows you to change how the responses to the original question are ordered. The options are:
- Rank: Shows the most relevant reply at the top, based on an automatic ranking system.
- Oldest: Displays replies starting with the earliest one first.
- Newest: Shows the latest replies at the top.
- Upvotes: Orders replies from the highest to the lowest number of upvotes.
Replies often build on previous messages and may reference earlier information, making the conversation flow naturally in chronological order. However, the default setting for viewing threads is “rank,” which might make the order seem out of sequence and harder to follow. You can change the order by selecting a different option next to “sort by,” but this change will only apply for that one session or thread.
If you want to set your preferred sorting method for all threads you view, follow these steps:
- Click on your profile image or avatar at the top right of any page and choose “Preferences.”
- On the profile page, scroll down until you find “Other Preferences.”
- Look for “Default thread sort” and select “Oldest” from the options.
- After selecting your preference, scroll to the bottom left and click “Submit” to save your changes.
This way, your threads will always display responses in your preferred order, making it easier to follow the conversations.
