Are you seeing annoying popup notifications in the upper right corner of your Mac’s screen? These messages often appear to be legitimate but are actually scams designed to trick you into downloading unwanted software or visiting harmful websites. Here’s what you can do to stop them in their tracks.
Step-by-Step Guide to Block Popup Notifications on Your Mac
1. Open Safari
First, you need to launch the Safari app, which can be found in your Applications folder, Launchpad, or Dock. You’ll know it’s open when you see its name right next to the Apple menu at the top of your screen.
2. Access Preferences
To manage your notification settings, go to Safari’s Preferences (or Settings). Click on Websites and then select Notifications. Here, you should see a list of websites that you’ve allowed to send notifications.
3. Remove Unwanted Notifications
Remove any websites listed there to stop receiving notifications from them. It should look similar to the empty list shown in the example image.
4. Take Precaution with Other Browsers
If you use browsers other than Safari, we’ll cover those next. You can follow similar steps to block notifications.
Important Note: Don’t Download Anything
You don’t need to install or download additional software to deal with these notifications. It’s important to remember that these popups are not viruses or malware. While they can be bothersome, they are a standard web feature designed for notifications.
Why Are You Seeing These Popups?
These notifications appear because you accidentally gave permission for certain sites to send them to you. For example, you might have seen a request pop up on a website asking if you’d like to receive notifications. If you clicked "Allow," you opened the door to future messages.
To prevent these from popping up in the first place, always decline any notification requests unless you are completely sure you want to receive updates from that site. It’s usually safer to choose options like "Dismiss," "Don’t Allow," or "Cancel."
Disable Future Notifications
To avoid being bothered by these kinds of requests in the future, go back to Safari’s Preferences. Under the Websites tab, uncheck the option that says "Allow websites to ask for permission to send notifications." This will stop sites from even asking if they can send notifications.
What About Other Browsers?
If you’re using browsers like Chrome or Firefox, blocking notifications can be done through the settings. While the steps may vary slightly, the principles are similar: look for the notifications section in your browser’s preferences and manage your settings accordingly.
