Experiencing unexpected issues with your Mac keyboard can be frustrating, especially when it feels like the settings have changed on their own. Before diving into more complex solutions, it’s smart to check your MacOS settings. Sometimes, features like Mouse Keys or Full Keyboard Access can be toggled on without you realizing it, impacting how your keyboard works. Here’s a simple guide to help you troubleshoot and resolve these keyboard behavior issues.

How to Fix Keyboard Issues on MacOS

Step 1: Check Key Repeat Rate and Delay Until Repeat

Start by going to System Settings > Keyboard. Here, you can adjust the Key Repeat Rate and Delay Until Repeat. Incorrect settings can mess with features you use regularly, like the Accent Menu.

Step 2: Inspect the Function of the Fn Key

Navigate to System Settings > Keyboard > Press fn key to. This setting can change what the Fn key does, so verify that it’s set according to your preference.

Step 3: Review Keyboard Shortcuts

Next, go to System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Navigation > Keyboard Shortcuts. Here, you’ll find settings that can alter the behavior of your function keys, modifier keys, and other keyboard shortcuts. Ensure these are set correctly.

Step 4: Check Input Sources

Head over to System Settings > Keyboard > Text Input > Input Sources > Edit. If your keyboard is set to an incorrect language, it may produce unexpected characters from your keys. Make sure the right input source is selected.

Step 5: Examine Text Replacements

In System Settings > Keyboard > Text Input > Text Replacements, check if there are any unwanted text replacements activated. These can automatically change letter sequences into something else, leading to confusion while typing.

Step 6: Review Accessibility Settings

Go to System Settings > Accessibility > Motor > Keyboard > Full Keyboard Access. Use the information icon (ⓘ) to see if any commands are set that could interfere with normal key functions, causing keys to act strangely or become non-functional.

Step 7: Investigate Sticky Keys Feature

In the same Accessibility menu, check if Sticky Keys is enabled. This feature can keep modifier keys active even after you have released them, which can lead to unexpected keyboard behavior.

Step 8: Check for Slow Keys

Also under Accessibility, see if Slow Keys is turned on. If it is, you will need to press keys for a longer duration before they register, which can hinder your typing speed.

Step 9: Look into Mouse Keys

Still in Accessibility, check under Pointer Control > Mouse Keys. If enabled, this feature can interfere with standard keys like 7, 8, 9, U, I, O, J, K, L, effectively making them unusable or altering their standard operation.

Step 10: Check Mission Control Shortcuts

Finally, go to System Settings > Desktop & Dock > Mission Control > Shortcuts. Any conflicting settings here could also change how your function keys and modifiers work.

By following these steps, you should be able to identify and fix the settings that may be affecting your keyboard’s performance. If problems persist after reviewing these areas, consider reaching out to Apple Support for further assistance. Your keyboard should work seamlessly, allowing you to type away without interruptions.
