If you’re having trouble seeing or changing your Windows desktop background when connecting through the Lightsail console, it’s because of the way the browser-based remote desktop (RDP) client works. This web-based RDP connection is designed to save bandwidth and improve speed, which means some visual features like custom backgrounds often don’t appear.
Luckily, there’s a simple fix. Instead of connecting through the web browser, you can use a full Remote Desktop client on your computer. This will give you access to all the Windows personalization options, including changing your desktop background.
If you’re using a Windows computer, you can use the built-in Remote Desktop Connection application. You’ll just need to know your Windows instance’s public IP address, along with your administrator username and password. Open the Remote Desktop Connection app, enter the IP address, and log in with your credentials.
For macOS users, it’s best to install the Microsoft Remote Desktop app from the App Store. After installing, add your instance using its IP address, then connect with your administrator username and password.
Using these full RDP clients instead of the web-based version makes a noticeable difference. You’ll be able to personalize your desktop as you normally would, with all visual features available.
This approach is simple, quick, and ensures you get the full Windows experience for your Lightsail instance.
