Here’s how you can set up Live Translation on your device while traveling within or outside the EU:
First, make sure your Apple ID and region are set outside the EU—ideally in the UK or another region where Live Translation is fully supported. This step is important because it ensures all features work smoothly.
If you’re seeing a message that says “languages need downloading” even after you’ve already downloaded them, don’t worry. The solution is to tidy up your language settings. Go to Settings, then tap on General, and select Language & Region. Remove any extra languages you don’t need so only your primary language remains.
To be extra sure everything is correct, switch your region temporarily. For example, change it from the UK to the US, then back to the UK. This refreshes the region and language settings and can help fix any glitches. Just remember to keep only the main language you want active during this process.
Next, check your AirPods settings. Make sure you’ve downloaded the UK language pack in the language download area. It’s best to do this with your region set to the UK—using a VPN isn’t necessary and might cause complications. Turn off the VPN during setup, especially if you’re in Spain or another country.
Once your setup is complete, open the Apple Translate app. Tap the Live button at the bottom and scroll down to find “Start Conversation.” Verify that it displays the languages correctly—for instance, Their Language: X, and Your Language: English.
Finally, put on your noise-canceling headphones, and you’re all set to use live translation wherever you go. This method ensures the feature works properly, even when you’re traveling or outside the EU.
