If you’re like me, you have a weekly hour-long phone call that you want to record and transcribe. I use Apple’s new call recording feature to do this. Once the call is finished, I rely on the built-in transcription tool to turn the recording into text.
However, I’ve run into a common problem. About one out of every five times, the transcription stops early. For example, on a 60-minute call, it might only transcribe the first five minutes. The frustrating part is that there’s no way to pause or restart the process. Once it stops, you can’t pick up where it left off or clear out the partial transcript and try again.
To work around this issue, I have to manually take the audio file, export it, and then upload it into a third-party app like Otter.ai. These apps often do a better job of transcribing from start to finish. Then, I spend additional time matching the speakers and cleaning up the transcript to make it accurate.
Using the latest iPhone, like the iPhone 16 Pro, I bought specifically to take advantage of Apple’s features. But even with the newest device, frequent failures in the transcription process are frustrating. It would be great if Apple provided a more reliable method, so we can easily transcribe lengthy calls without having to jump through extra hoops every time it stops halfway.
