Many individuals believe that incorporating a variety of foods is the secret to maintaining a healthy diet. They frequently try new foods, switch up their meals, and seek exciting options to stay motivated.

However, recent research from the American Psychological Association indicates that when it comes to shedding pounds, simplicity and consistency might actually be more effective.

This study, published in Health Psychology, revealed that participants who ate similar meals every day and kept their calorie intake stable tended to lose more weight than those who frequently changed their food choices. This challenges the common assumption that more variety always leads to better health outcomes.

Losing weight isn’t just about what you eat, but also about how manageable it is to maintain healthy routines over time. Today’s environment offers countless food options, many of which are high in sugar, fat, and calories, making healthy choices more challenging each day.

The researchers aimed to determine whether establishing straightforward eating routines could facilitate weight loss. They observed 112 overweight or obese adults over a 12-week structured weight-loss program. Participants tracked their food intake through a mobile app and weighed themselves daily with a wireless scale, providing detailed insights into their eating habits and progress.

The study focused on two key factors: calorie consistency—how much daily calorie intake fluctuated—and meal repetition—how often the same foods were consumed instead of trying new ones.

Results clearly showed that individuals who frequently repeated the same meals lost more weight, averaging about 5.9% of their body weight. Those with more diverse diets lost around 4.3%. Additionally, stable calorie intake played a significant role; every 100-calorie increase in daily variation corresponded to roughly a 0.6% decrease in weight loss.

This suggests that sticking to a predictable eating pattern can help people stay on track. When meals are familiar and easier to predict, decision-making becomes simpler, and the temptation to indulge in unhealthy foods decreases.

Interestingly, the study also noted that participants who reported higher calorie intake on weekends actually experienced greater weight loss. The explanation might be that these individuals were more consistent in tracking their food, rather than eating more overall. Many people tend to neglect recording their meals during weekends, leading to less accurate data.

While embracing some variety is important for a balanced diet—especially when consuming fruits and vegetables—excessive variety in an environment filled with tempting options can make it more difficult to stick to healthy habits.
