The first two installments of The Sims, now celebrating their 25th anniversary, have been reintroduced in a special bundle that features nearly every expansion pack released, including the popular pet-centric expansion, Unleashed. This pack was groundbreaking for its time, allowing players to introduce dogs and cats, engage in gardening, and explore various other activities. Although adding pets has become a staple feature in the more recent games, the option to welcome a furry companion into your household was quite revolutionary back in the early days of The Sims.
In contrast to its successors, adopting pets in the original The Sims is a bit more intricate. For instance, in The Sims 4, players can simply use their phone or computer to select a pet after their household creation. However, in The Sims 1, you must visit a community lot to find a pet or build a connection with stray animals that may wander onto your property.
How to Get to the Pet Shop in Old Town
Available Pets Include Cats, Dogs, Birds, Fish, and Reptiles
To pick out a pet, head to Pet Paradise, the pet shop located in McArthur Square in Old Town. You can take a cab by calling for a ride and selecting 70 Elm Street as your destination. Once you’re at the store, you can explore a range of small pets including lovebirds, fish, turtles, budgies, and iguanas.
Buying a Small Pet
Selecting a small pet is straightforward. Just click on the cage or enclosure housing the pet you’re interested in and choose the option to “Buy.” Your new pet will go into your inventory until you return home, at which point you’ll need to buy a cage in Buy Mode. For larger pets like cats or dogs, just head to the pet shop in the community lot to make your selection, with each option set at 399 Simoleons.
After selecting a cat or dog, you can simply click "Adopt a Cat/Dog" to choose the breed and name your new companion upon checking out. Your new pet will follow you home automatically, ensuring you won’t accidentally leave it behind. Before departing Old Town, make sure to visit the community lot’s pet trainer, who can teach your new pet some tricks and provide valuable advice on training, making it easier to bond with your new animal friend.
Adopting a Stray Pet Requires Building a Relationship
Strays Will Appear Randomly All Over Town
If you’d prefer not to spend Simoleons at the pet store, you have the option to adopt a stray. Keep in mind that The Sims 1 only features eight unique stray animals, as it does not generate new ones like later editions do. The available strays include four cats—Spork, Cali, Fluffy, and Aristotle—and four dogs—Fifi, Buzz, Spike, and Cher.
While this method is more time-intensive and lacks cheats to expedite the process, it can feel incredibly rewarding. To adopt a stray, you first need to build a bond with the animal by interacting with it. Start with simple actions like petting, which will eventually unlock options for more engaged interactions like hugging and playing. It may take a few days of interactions to unlock the adoption option, and be careful not to let too much time pass between visits, as relationships decline quickly in The Sims 1.
Once your relationship is strong enough, the option to adopt will appear, allowing you to bring the animal into your household. After that, you can buy necessary supplies for your new pet, like a food bowl in Buy Mode, or even a collar from the Old Town pet shop to give it a unique touch. Additionally, consider purchasing some toys since pets have a fun meter that needs to be maintained.
