Xbox has announced that development kits for its upcoming console, currently known by the code name Project Helix, will begin shipping in 2027 and beyond. This indicates that third-party developers, regardless of size, won’t have access to the hardware until at least 2027. The kits referenced are still in the alpha stage, which means they don’t necessarily reflect the final hardware that will be used for game releases.
This information has added fuel to ongoing speculation that both Project Helix and the PlayStation 6 might launch in 2027. These rumors have been circulating for months, with the latest resurgence emerging just last week. Tech insider Moore’s Law Is Dead reaffirmed his belief that Sony plans to release the PS6 in late 2027, despite the disclosure of Project Helix. This contrasts with earlier reports based on Sony’s financial outlook, which suggested the company intends to extend the PS5’s lifecycle beyond initial projections. Bloomberg also reported that Sony is “considering” delays to its new platform, potentially launching in 2028 or 2029, driven by chip supply and RAM pricing concerns.
Xbox’s plan to distribute early developer kits in 2027 lends support to the idea of a prolonged generation cycle. Yet, some industry leakers, like KelperL2, who have a credible track record related to PlayStation developments, maintain that both Sony and Microsoft are aiming for a holiday 2027 release for their next consoles.
The conflicting information has left the industry and consumers uncertain. While Xbox’s timeline suggests a possible release in 2027, it’s also plausible that their first-party studios will have longer access to the new hardware, even if the dev kits aren’t widely available until then. Additionally, many PS5 owners are hesitant about a PS6 arriving as early as 2027; most would prefer to see it launched in 2028 or later.
