Nian Suichang’s sidequest in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers has the most emotional weight among all NPC quests. As you progress with him, you’ll witness his growth as a warrior committed to safeguarding innocent people against the monsters threatening the land.
In exchange for your help, Nian Suichang will assist you by lending you his sword for several boss fights. Despite the terrifying challenges the game presents, this brave and hopeful young man brings a ray of light that every player should appreciate on their first run through the story.
How to Start Nian Suichang’s Quest (Act One)
First, talk to Qiao Lin at the Reverent Temple—this step isn’t mandatory, but it provides important background on Nian Suichang’s storyline. You can find Qiao Lin upstairs on the second floor. After speaking with him, he will give you the Peachwood Amulet.
Later, you can give this amulet to Qiao Ying, an elder woman also upstairs in Shu Sanctum, to trigger a separate NPC sidequest.
While traveling to Shu Sanctum from Lightzen Temple, you will encounter Nian Suichang on the right side of the path, standing in front of the Child in the Jar’s house. Exhaust all dialogue options until you see an opportunity to choose “Agree to help.” Agreeing will earn you the Bone Whistle, an item that allows summoning NPCs during boss battles and can be reused.
How to Obtain the Mercurial Blood
Meet Nian Suichang at the entrance to Shu Sanctum, on the left side of the courtyard. Use the Bone Whistle to summon him during the boss fight against Lu Bingzhang, the Feathered Priest, on the top floor of the sanctum. After defeating Lu Bingzhang, return to Suichang to exchange the Mercurial Blood for three Soft Rush.
Rest assured, Suichang’s presence won’t make the fight harder; in fact, his role is minimal, often attracting the boss’s focus rather than impacting the fight’s outcome.
How to Help Nian Suichang at the Reverent Temple
After obtaining the Mercurial Blood, Nian Suichang will go to the Reverent Temple. Speak to both Suichang and Xuanyangzi on the second floor. Suichang will give you three Kong Wine bottles, and Xuanyangzi will provide a Red Mercury Shoot.
Finding Nian Suichang’s Tattered Pack (Act Two)
As act two begins after Honglan’s defeat, you’ll meet Nian Suichang at the gates to Act Two, outside the Reverent Temple—specifically, at the courtyard doors to the left. Open the gates and talk to him until he offers you the Tattered Pack. The pack is situated ahead in the Snowy Passage, near a fallen warrior with a bow. You can fight him or ignore him; the pack is on the ground in front of him.
Return the pack to Nian Suichang and answer a question. Choosing “Expose him” will cause Suichang to attack you, while “Remain silent” will lead to him grief-stricken and possibly giving up his warrior’s life. Either ending ends with the player being served Depression Soup, but both grant the same rewards: the Sword of Judgment, Sword of Exorcism, Champion’s Clothing, and the Zhanlu Sword.
Assisting Nian Suichang in the Rebel Camp
Navigate through the Cloudspire Outskirts without crossing the bridge after the pyres ignite. Find the door near the shrine, which can be opened with a chisel, and go to the cave at its end—ignoring the ladder. Talk to Suichang about Ai Nengqi, who will give you permission to summon him during the fight.
Proceed up the hill past Suichang, defeating the boss in the Avian Dwelling to earn a key for a shortcut back to the camp. When back at the camp, Nian Suichang will be on the left of the bridge, near the campfire. Talk to him to receive three Nitter Fire Pots, enabling you to summon him for the Fierce Tiger fight later.
Finding Nian Suichang at Mt. Zhenwu Temple (Act Three)
Travel through Mt. Zhenwu Temple, defeating Liu Wenxiu, who provides a key for a shortcut to the Refugee Camp. Take this shortcut, and Nian Suichang will be standing near the bridge. Talk to him—initially upset, but he’ll forgive you, granting permission to summon him for the Fierce Tiger battle.
Complete the temple exploration, find the Fierce Tiger boss, and invoke Nian Suichang during the fight to advance his quest. Afterward, rest at the campfire, and you’ll find Nian Suichang waiting, ready for dialogue and your chance to earn three more Special Pills.
Endings and Rewards in Act Four
Progressing through the final act, after the Worship’s Rise transformation, reach Shu Sanctum and exit to the hills above. As you ascend, watch for traps and enemies before reaching the top, where Nian Suichang appears. Your earlier choices influence his appearance:
- Expose him, causing madness and an attack—leading to his death.
- Remain silent, which overwhelms him with grief, and he may throw himself off the cliff.
Regardless of the outcome, you’ll receive the Sword of Judgment, Sword of Exorcism, the Champion’s Clothing set, and the Zhanlu Sword as rewards. His end is sealed by your decisions, but the rewards remain consistent, with the lore items serving primarily to deepen the story.
