Digital Extremes Lacks a Nintendo Switch 2 Dev Kit
There’s a clear reason why Warframe hasn’t been officially ported to the Nintendo Switch 2. Digital Extremes doesn’t have a development kit for this new console.
At TennoCon 2025 this weekend, members of the Warframe development team shared a lot of details about their projects. During a live Q&A session (as reported by IGN), CEO Steve Sinclair explained why there is no native Warframe release for the Nintendo Switch 2, even though Warframe came to the Nintendo Switch just a year after its launch.
The port of Warframe for the Nintendo Switch is playable on the Switch 2 through backwards compatibility.
Sinclair showed enthusiasm for a future Nintendo Switch 2 version of Warframe but clarified that Digital Extremes can’t create a version without a development kit. These kits are essential tools developers need to build software for specific platforms. They come with features that help developers debug and access hardware services that regular users can’t reach. Right now, Digital Extremes is waiting for a Nintendo Switch 2 development kit.
Steve Sinclair stated, “I know our programmers are just, like, ‘Oh, I can’t wait.’ We definitely have plans. When we get a dev kit, we will be doing a custom build for Warframe. Absolutely.” He acknowledged there’s a “backlog” of dev kits for the Nintendo Switch 2 but mentioned that all they need is “just one” to start working on the port.
While there’s no set date for when Digital Extremes will receive a dev kit, fans can feel confident that a native Nintendo Switch 2 version of Warframe is on the way eventually.
