Choosing a horse in Ghost of Yotei can feel like a big decision when you finally get to it. The warning that says, “You will have this horse forever,” might seem serious, but it mostly just means the horse you pick will stay with you for the rest of your playthrough.
It might take a while to come across the option to choose a horse, depending on how much you explore. You need to find the stables first to unlock the choice. Once you do, you’ll be asked to select a horse to replace your starting one. If you’re curious about what this choice really means, I can explain it all.

What difference does choosing a horse in Ghost of Yotei make?
Once you finish the initial encounter with The Snake, you’ll get a horse almost right away. After that, you’re free to ride around the Yotei Grasslands on a white horse. While you can ride other horses you find, calling your horse with a whistle will bring your specific horse back to you.
Near ATSU’s childhood home, east of the starting area, there’s a place called Old Stables. When you find it, you’ll start a short mission to protect the stable and its owner from outlaws. After completing this mission, you can choose a horse as a reward—options include a white, black, or dappled horse. You’ll also get to pick a name for your horse from three options: Shimaki (Tornado), Mochizuki (Full Moon), or Homura (Flame).
There’s no gameplay advantage to any of these horses, so don’t worry. It’s purely about looks and naming. Atsu will sometimes refer to your horse by the name you chose, and your horse will appear whenever you whistle for it—beyond that, nothing changes.
Remember, the saddle design and color are also customizable and purely cosmetic. The black bars that appear when you ride are just visual effects; you can turn them off if you prefer.
Ghost of Yotei Digital Deluxe Horse
Like Ghost of Tsushima, the Digital Deluxe Edition of Ghost of Yotei (which is also part of the Collector’s Edition) includes an extra horse to choose from. This special horse doesn’t have any stats that make it better than others, but it will be available alongside the standard options. Early images show it’s likely to be a brown horse—similar to the one in Ghost of Tsushima.
