As you advance in your quests in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, you’ll sometimes need to assist local residents in fighting against Team Rocket’s evil schemes. Besides showcasing your problem-solving skills out of kindness, you’ll earn valuable rewards, like the Master Ball.
The Master Ball guarantees a perfect catch and is relatively easy to obtain if you follow this guide to infiltrate Silph Co. and defeat Team Rocket members, including their boss, Giovanni.
Where to Get the Master Ball
After you get the Silph Scope and clear the ghostly tower in Lavender Town, you can pursue the Master Ball. First, head to Saffron City by traveling through the underground tunnel on the east side of town.
When you arrive in Saffron City, you’ll see that the whole area is filled with Team Rocket Grunts wandering around. Make your way to the large building in the center—this is Silph Co.
(Note: If you haven’t dealt with the ghost in Lavender Town, a Rocket guard will block the entrance to Silph Co.)
How to Get Through Silph Co.
Once you’re there, the guard at the entrance will step aside. Head inside and fight your way up from the second floor. Take the teleporter to the eighth floor and battle the scientists stationed there.
Be cautious with their Koffing and Grimer—they can poison your Pokémon, so aim to KO them quickly if possible to stay safe.
As you progress to higher floors, you’ll need to find key items and defeat more Rocket members, including one of the Rocket Brothers. On the seventh floor, you’ll want to pick up an Iron, then continue down to the sixth floor.
On the fourth floor, find the Card Key by going down the southern hall past a Rocket Grunt and a teleporter. You need to step on a teleporter and then return to access the right side, where the Card Key is located. This key opens many locked doors throughout Silph Co.
While exploring, you can find useful items like a Full Heal, Max Revive, and Escape Rope behind the far-left door on the fourth floor, and a Hyper Potion near Scientist Jose in the southwest area.
Proceed up to the ninth floor, where you’ll encounter the third of four Rocket Brothers. There’s also a bed here for a quick rest if needed. On the tenth floor, grab the Carbos, Rare Candy, and Ultra Ball. Use the teleporter on the west side of the third floor to reach the seventh floor.
On this floor, you’ll face your rival in a battle. His team includes Pokémon roughly in the level 35-37 range:
- Pidgeot – Level 37
- Alakazam – Level 35
- Exeggcute – Level 35
- Growlithe – Level 37
Claim a Lapras from the trainer nearby after the fight. Then, continue through the teleporter and defeat the final Rocket Grunt blocking the path to Giovanni.
Giovanni’s team includes:
- Nidorino – Level 37
- Nidoqueen – Level 41
- Kangaskhan – Level 35
- Rhyhorn – Level 37
After defeating Giovanni, talk to the Silph Co. President sitting on the couch inside his office to claim your Master Ball.
Which Pokémon Should You Use the Master Ball On?
Deciding when to use the Master Ball is a personal choice, but here are some common recommendations:
- Entei
- Suicune
- Raikou
- Mewtwo
- Shiny Pokémon
The best use of the Master Ball is on Legendary Pokémon, as they tend to flee or use moves like Roar to escape. Those legendary dogs (Entei, Suicune, Raikou) are particularly good targets. Your choice may vary depending on your starter Pokémon:
- Entei appears if you chose Bulbasaur
- Suicune if you chose Charmander
- Raikou if you chose Squirtle
Using the Master Ball on these rare Pokémon prevents losing them forever if they run away or are knocked out.
