At the start of Nioh 3, players face an interesting decision about one of their main allies and guardian spirits, Kusanagi. Kusanagi can take one of two different forms. Unlike previous Nioh games, which mainly offered choices about weapons, this choice about Kusanagi is quite significant.
Early in the game’s story, you’ll find yourself transported back in time to a mysterious place called the Eternal Rift. This area acts as a central hub, but for now, it’s mainly used to decide which form of Kusanagi you will have. The options are a blue water-themed form and a red fire-themed form.
Interacting with either form reveals what kind of influence you’re choosing. The red Kusanagi will provide you with armor suited for a samurai and grant a +1 bonus to Strength. On the other hand, the blue Kusanagi gives you ninja-style armor and a +1 bonus to Skill.
By this point in the game, you likely have some experience with both samurai and ninja playstyles, so the decision mainly depends on which style you prefer early on. The stat boost is temporary because, later in the game, it becomes less impactful, making the choice more about your playstyle preference.
Additionally, the form you choose will turn into a Guardian Spirit. The fire Kusanagi is equipped with abilities called Nagi’s Blade and Heaven’s Fire, while the water form grants abilities named Turbulent Waters and Heaven’s Drops. Both are powerful and versatile, with similar strength, so your preference is usually about style.
You can unlock the other Kusanagi form later in the story. To do this, you’ll need to reach a time period called Antiquity, which comes after completing the Heian era. During early Antiquity, you’ll face a boss who joins you afterward. Defeating this boss allows you to switch to the Kusanagi form you didn’t choose initially. As you progress further, you can unlock even stronger versions of each form.
