In Donkey Kong Bananza, you can find hundreds of different fossils to collect. Among these, the Extra-Rare Fossils are special because they unlock some of the rarest upgrades in the game. Each level has only one of these rare fossils, making them much harder to find than the regular fossils that you get by destroying parts of the environment. Usually, finding these rare fossils means completing specific goals and exploring new areas more thoroughly.
Overall, there are eight Extra-Rare Fossils in the game. One can be found on each level layer you go through. To fully complete Donkey Kong Bananza, you need to collect all types of fossils. These fossils are not only for upgrades but are also used as currency to buy different costumes. The Extra-Rare Fossils are key to purchasing the final upgrade for a layer’s signature outfit, so they are very valuable collectibles.
Here’s how to find some of these fossils:
-
The Whale Fossil is in the Lagoon Layer. It’s easy to spot as a large artifact floating near Salvager’s Landing in region SL101. You’ll need to progress through the level before you can access it, as it’s tied to the overall progress of the lagoon.
-
To get the Whale Fossil, you should go through the Lagoon Layer until you fix the water shortage problem, which raises the sea level. This lets Donkey Kong swim toward the fossil, located directly across from the Warp Gong. Just break the amber holding the fossil to claim it.
-
The Triceratops Fossil in the Canyon Layer is found at the Gravel Storage area of SL301. From there, keep moving along a narrow path until you dodge a pink laser and then dig under a set of lasers using DK’s environment-breaking ability. Using a minecart loaded with bombs, throw a Boom Bomb at the amber-enclosed slab to expose and break the fossil free.
-
The T. Rex Fossil in the Cold Layer is accessed by fast traveling to the Coolstripe Cavern Exit at SL500, then going into an ice tunnel and using DK’s Zebra transformation to dash through icy paths. Destroy the environment below a snowy bridge to reveal the fossil, which you can then break free.
-
The Spider Fossil in the Forest Layer (SL601) is near Rubbery Roost. It’s visible in the small valley just before the fast travel point, making it one of the easiest to find.
-
The Robot Fossil can be found near the Ferocious Fryhouse Station at SL1400. Climb crystals on the left of the railcart path and carefully platform to a large spear-like rock formation. Use salt chunks to dissolve the muck trapping the fossil, revealing and freeing it without breaking the amber.
-
The Swordfish Fossil in the Planet Core area at SL1606 is uncovered by exploring a secret platform with explosive mines. Use DK’s Kong Bananza form and the airborne mining mechanic to cause chain reactions, eventually revealing the fossil embedded in a gold-filled cave.
-
The Sea Urchin Fossil is located at the Oasis Obervastion Deck, SL1203. Break the rocks surrounding the glowing fossil, which is guarded by scorpions, using DK’s Kong Bananza form to fend off enemies and clear the environment.
These fossils are important for unlocking the full array of outfit upgrades and achieving 100% completion. Collecting all of them not only provides great items for DK and Pauline but also shows your dedication as a player.
