Cozy Expansion for Palia: Exploring Elderwood
The delightful MMO Palia just launched its exciting new expansion, Elderwood, introducing a plethora of new quests and areas to discover. This expansive zone is filled with fresh plants, critters, fish, and treasures, all encapsulating the enchanting and eerie essence of the forest. However, before you can start gathering, you’ll need to complete the quest titled “The Nature of Shadows,” which is the third quest in the latest main storyline.
Elderwood brings a variety of new items and mechanics to Palia, such as stables to unlock, new ore nodes, and powerful buffs in the form of relics. All players can access this new zone, but quality tools are crucial for harvesting materials in Elderwood. There are numerous quests to keep you engaged involving exploration, interactions with villagers, and thrilling new main quests to complete.
How to Begin "The Nature of Shadows"
To kick off the quest “The Nature of Shadows,” you must first meet the requirements to embark on the new main story quests. This means completing all Vault quests and progressing through the main Palia questline until you finish “Rooted in Place.” Once you’ve accomplished that, a new cinematic will roll, and Einar will appear at your home, instructing you to talk to Subira at the Night Sky Temple.
As you follow the questline, you and Subira will discover that a peculiar essence is affecting some of the local forage. Certain plants and insects appear to have shadows attached to them. Fortunately, Tamala will arrive with a helpful potion, revealing that she has a brew that will allow you to interact with the affected forage for brief periods.
Tamala’s Potion Ingredients
To prepare the potion, Tamala will require four primary ingredients, and you can ask her for hints about where to find some of the new items. The ingredients she needs are: one Cave Piksii, one Toadstool Floatfish, three Elderwood Orchids, and 10 Infected Essence. Fortunately, all these can be collected easily with standard tools; just make sure to upgrade to a fine-quality fishing rod, axe, and bug-catching belt.
Where to Find the Cave Piksii
The Cave Piksii is a new insect type that can be captured using smoke bombs and, as the name suggests, is typically found in caves. They often appear after picking up a Staircase Mushroom, with the pale blue butterflies fluttering around afterward. I found a good number in the Red Blossom Cave area, where some flew around without needing any mushroom collection.
Tip: You can craft Sneaky Smoke Bombs at your worktable once you reach Bug Catching level two, using one piece of fur, one piece of clay, and one Sundrop Lily.
Cave Piksii aren’t too quick, but you’ll need about three or four smoke bombs to stun them. I used Sneaky Smoke bombs with my upgraded belt and caught more than enough even at Bug Catching level nine.
Where to Find the Toadstool Floatfish
You can fish for the Toadstool Floatfish in the lake area of Elderwood, and remember to fish without bait. This saves you the hassle of using worms or glow worms. I headed over to De Mer Dock and started fishing off one of the piers.
Despite the name, the Toadstool Floatfish resembles a distinctive jellyfish with bright green tips on its tentacles, rather than a traditional fish. They don’t move much while being reeled in, but can occasionally leap out of the water, so be sure to pause reeling until they settle back down.
Where to Find Elderwood Orchids
You’ll need three Elderwood Orchids, but these fragrant flowers are plentiful throughout the Elderwood area. With their vibrant purple petals and green foliage, they’re easy to spot. I found that the Deep Woods area was the best spot for gathering lots of Elderwood Orchids to take back to Tamala.
Where to Find Infected Essence
The last ingredient is 10 pieces of Infected Essence, which Tamala will provide you with special gloves so you can collect them. While 10 sounds like a lot, the Infected Essence is scattered throughout the Elderwood map, making it easy to collect while you’re gathering the other items. It appears as little motes of purple energy that stand out from a distance.
Once you’ve gathered all the ingredients, head back to Tamala at the Central Stables, and she’ll concoct an Elderwood Potion for you. With this potion in hand, you can collect infected forage for 10 minutes, after which you’ll need to brew another potion. Completing “The Nature of Shadows” will unlock Tamala’s new potion shop in the Central Stables, much anticipated by Palia players. There, she will exchange various Elderwood-specific items for Infected Essence, including more Elderwood Potions.
