When leveling up your team in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, it’s important to also focus on making each Pokémon as strong as possible. One key method is through EVs, or Effort Values. EVs are hidden points that can be added to your Pokémon’s stats to boost their strength, giving them an advantage over others at the same level.
Each Pokémon has a total of 510 EVs that can be distributed across all six stats, with each stat capped at 252 EVs. This means you can completely max out two stats and still have some points left over to increase another stat if you want. However, training EVs can be tricky, especially if you’re working with a whole team, but there are ways to make it faster.
How to Reset EVs in Legends: Z-A
Since each Pokémon can have up to 510 EVs, you’ll often find that caught or used Pokémon already have EVs assigned to their stats. If you want to allocate EVs differently, you’ll need to reset them.
There are two main ways to do this. The first is a full reset, available after completing the main story. Visit Lady Clear at the Rust Syndicate office after Mission 20. Talk to the woman at the desk on the right; she will offer to reset your Pokémon’s EVs for five Mega Shards. You’ll need to repeat this process for each Pokémon you want to reset.
Checking Your Pokémon’s EVs
To see your Pokémon’s current EV distribution, open their Summary screen and scroll down to the stats. Any stat that’s sparkling has reached the maximum EVs.
The second method is by using berries, which can be found throughout Lumiose City. Some berries decrease EVs for specific stats and also increase friendship. Feeding enough of these berries to your Pokémon will reset their EVs for that stat.
Berries for Resetting EVs
Just like Vitamins, berries lower EVs by 10 points per berry for a specific stat. Since you need to lower EVs for all six stats, collecting berries for each stat can be time-consuming. You can buy berries at Lumiose’s berry market stalls for 200 Pokémon Dollars each.
The most accessible stall is near the center of Lumiose, by the Tower, on Estival Avenue next to a Galettes stall. Here, you’ll find every berry type needed to lower each stat, eliminating the need to hunt down specific berries.
Berries and What They Do
Unlike Vitamins—which directly increase specific stats—berries reduce EVs in one stat at a time. Here are some examples:
- Pomeg Berry: Lowers HP EVs, increases friendliness.
- Kelpsy Berry: Lowers Attack EVs, increases friendliness.
- Qualot Berry: Lowers Defense EVs, increases friendliness.
- Hondew Berry: Lowers Special Attack EVs, increases friendliness.
- Grepa Berry: Lowers Special Defense EVs, increases friendliness.
- Tamato Berry: Lowers Speed EVs, increases friendliness.
After Resets
Once EVs are reset, you can start training them again. While battling or catching Pokémon is an option, it can be slow. Instead, feeding Vitamins is a quick way to raise EVs.
Training EVs with Vitamins and Feathers
Vitamins are the easiest to use but are expensive. They boost one EV stat by ten points each, and you need 26 Vitamins to max out a single stat because 26 × 10 = 260 EVs (the extra is just to reach the cap of 252).
You can earn Vitamins through side missions or as rewards, but they become available for purchase after finishing the main story for 5,000 Pokémon Dollars each. Buying enough Vitamins to max out two stats costs 265,000 Pokémon Dollars per Pokémon, totaling 1,590,000 Pokémon Dollars for a full team.
Feathers are alternative items found on the ground in Lumiose City, which increase EVs by one point each, making them cheaper but less efficient. They help reduce the overall cost of Vitamins but shouldn’t be relied on solely to max EVs.
Catching Pokémon for EV Training
Another effective method involves battling or capturing Pokémon that give EV points for specific stats. Each Pokémon in the game is assigned a particular stat that they reward EVs toward. For example, fighting Pyroar boosts Special Attack EVs, while Tepig and several others boost HP EVs.
When defeating or capturing these Pokémon, EVs are earned automatically via the EXP share system. Remember—any Pokémon in your party will also earn EVs, so it’s best to only have Pokémon you’re training or don’t mind gaining EVs in that specific stat.
Using Items to Boost EVs
You can further speed up EV training by equipping items called Training Items, which increase EV gains from battles. These include:
- Power Weight (HP)
- Power Bracer (Attack)
- Power Belt (Defense)
- Power Lens (Special Attack)
- Power Band (Special Defense)
- Power Anklet (Speed)
These items can be obtained through side missions or purchased from Quasartico Inc. after the main story.
Note: While equipped, these items will slow your Pokémon’s speed, so be cautious when battling strong opponents.
Efficient EV Training Tips
- Save time by hunting alpha Pokémon, as they have perfect EVs for a stat, reducing the need for EV training.
- Focus on capturing Pokémon that reward EVs only for a single stat, avoiding those that reward multiple, to keep your training targeted.
- Use a combination of Vitamins for quick gains and battling for incremental EVs.
Knowing how to reset and train EVs effectively allows you to customize your team to be as powerful as possible, providing a strategic edge in post-game content and the Mega Dimension DLC.
