Abyss Gears are weapon mods in Crimson Desert that you can insert into your weapons to give them important boosts and special effects. While skillful combat is key to surviving in Crimson Desert, upgrading your weapons with the strongest Abyss Gears is also essential.
Some Abyss Gears, like Shadow Claw, are guaranteed drops from tough enemies. Here’s how you can find and defeat Black Fang, a Legendary Wolf, to earn the Shadow Claw Abyss Gear.
How to Start the Legendary Wolf Quest Chain
To get the Shadow Claw Abyss Gear, you first need to unlock the Legendary Wolf quest series inside the House Celeste faction. But before that, you must complete or progress through several other quest chains to reach that point.
It’s recommended to follow these quests in order, as each one unlocks the next.
Prerequisites for the Legendary Wolf Quest:
- House Roberts 10/10
- House Alfonso 6/6
- House Serkis 10/13
- House Celeste
- Queen of the Silkspun Chapel
- Abandoned Factory
- Hernand Parish of Solumen 4/6
- House Celeste
- The Hellhounds
- Vellua Fishermen’s Guild 6/6
Once all these requirements are met, you will unlock the Legendary Wolf quest chain, beginning with the “Silence from Afar” quest. Continue through this chain until you reach “Howls From The North Gate,” where you will be able to obtain the Shadow Claw Abyss Gear.
How to Find and Defeat Black Fang
The Hernandian Guard warns that the wolves you face aren’t ordinary, so prepare for a tough fight. To start, go to the Hernandian Ruins, located west of Drakesfall Gorge and southeast of The Ancient Rift. As you approach, small packs of wolves will be around, but they won’t attack unless you start the fight.
Follow the lantern and track the wolf’s paw prints to find Black Fang on a hill northwest of the Hernandian Ruins. The big black wolf is protected by a few smaller wolves, so it’s best to use a two-handed sword or a weapon with area damage effects.
Recommended weapons:
- Darkbringer
- Hound
Black Fang can teleport around the battlefield and attack unexpectedly, so be ready to dodge. In the initial encounter, take out the smaller wolves first, then focus on Black Fang’s quick attack patterns as it reappears.
Tips for the fight:
- Watch your minimap: Black Fang’s reappearances are marked by a large red circle.
- Dodge and counter: Use heavy attacks when Black Fang reappears, especially when you see red flashes indicating unblockable strikes.
- Stay alert: Once its health bar drops, the wolf will flee. Use your lantern again to follow its trail.
Follow the trail until you see Black Fang limping away. Pursue and prepare for a second battle. This time, the wolf will use more powerful attacks, including:
- Rearing on its hind legs and smashing the ground
- Teleporting and lunging with claws
- Dashing around with multi-hit combos ending in howling
During this fight, focus on dodging, counterattacking, and watching for red flashes that signal unblockable strikes. Using Force Palm early can ramp up damage quickly.
Rewards for Defeating Black Fang
After defeating Black Fang, a cutscene will play, and you’ll receive the following rewards:
- Liberation of Howling Hollow
- Leebur’s Soul (a key item)
- Shadow Claw Abyss Gear
What does the Shadow Claw do?
It’s a powerful melee gear that, when equipped, unleashes three wolf-like claw strikes forward, adding extra damage to heavy attacks.
