Hytale features many different biomes, ranging from glowing, magical mushroom areas to grassy savannas and classic forests filled with flowers and tall trees. Within these biomes, you’ll find various blocks, mostly used for building and decorating, but some also have specific functions.
For example, sand isn’t just a visually appealing block near water. It can be used to craft Empty Glass Potions, which are essential for brewing other potions. The wood you collect has multiple uses beyond basic building, especially when combined with the Builder’s Workbench.
How to Obtain Glass
Instead of making glass directly like in Minecraft, in Hytale, sand is used mainly to create Empty Glass Bottles, needed to brew potions at an Alchemist’s Table. The easiest way to find sand is to explore beaches, which appear along the edges between land and water. These biomes are characterized by sand blocks along with occasional patches of cobblestone or white sandstone.
On the map, darker yellow indicates sand, while lighter yellow marks white sandstone, commonly found along rivers and ponds.
Any pickaxe can break sand blocks efficiently, making it easy to gather as long as you have at least a crude pickaxe. Sand is most easily found on beaches, which you can reach quickly. To turn sand into bottles, you need a furnace, which can be crafted at a workbench using six tree trunks and six stones. Any type of wood block or structural wood block—like a crude door—can be used as fuel. Smelting one sand block into an empty glass bottle takes roughly ten seconds.
Gathering and Smelting Sand
Mining sand is straightforward with any tier of pickaxe, and beaches are plentiful. To craft a furnace, place six tree trunks and six stones at a workbench. Place the sand in the furnace along with wood or other fuel to smelt it into bottles. Each sand block produces one bottle after about ten seconds of smelting.
The second biome zone, the Howling Sands, contains many sand-rich areas. However, it’s safer to gather sand from beaches until you have at least iron gear, including armor and weapons.
How to Make Windows
To craft windows, you need a Builder’s Workbench, which is made with six tree trunks and three stones. Then, take any type of common wood, like birch or beech, and place it into the workbench to turn it into planks, doors, or windows.
Put the selected wood into the workbench’s crafting area by clicking or manually moving it. Most blocks are made at a rate of one tree trunk per new block, but windows are an exception—you get two for each trunk used. You can place these windows in your structures or use them as fuel in your furnace, campfire, or Chef’s Table. When used as fuel, they produce charcoal, another useful energy source.
Fuel Efficiency Tip
Wood blocks and windows burn for similar lengths of time, so converting wood into windows effectively doubles your fuel, especially helpful when smelting large amounts of ore.
