There are a few legendary and mythical Pokémon you’ll want to catch in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, but some of the earliest and most challenging to find are Moltres, Zapdos, and Articuno.

You’ll generally need to wait until near the end of the game to encounter these Pokémon, as you’ll require some hidden moves—like Surf and Strength—to reach their locations. Additionally, these Pokémon can be difficult to catch, especially if you don’t have Ultra Balls yet. However, once you have the means, you can go after them as soon as you’re prepared to face the Elite Four.

| Pokémon | Location |
| — | — |
| Moltres | To find Moltres, go to the Sevii Islands and enter Mt. Ember on One Island. You can reach it by Surf or taking the Ferry from Vermilion City, depending on your progress. Inside, head north through Mt. Ember Cave until the exit. Then go west and up the stairs. Continue north, climbing the stairs, until you reach a peak with boulders. Use Strength to move the boulders and clear your way to Moltres, which is just north of this area. |
| Articuno | Articuno is found in the Seafoam Islands. Travel to the Cinnabar Island and head east along Route 20 using Surf. You’ll reach a small island with a cave entrance and a trainer outside. Inside, explore the cave using ladders. Articuno is located on a small icy island within the cave, on a level featuring water that requires Surfing. |
| Zapdos | Zapdos is located at the Power Plant, home to many Electric Pokémon. To reach it, go to the entrance of the Rock Tunnel and surf along the river on the right side of the area, heading south to the Power Plant entrance. Once inside, go north and you’ll see the room Zapdos is in, behind a wall to the north. To access it, turn right and go south until you reach two machines side by side. From there, head east to the edge of the eastern wall, then follow the outer path north to reach Zapdos. |

When catching Moltres, Articuno, and Zapdos, a good strategy combines planning and luck. Always save your game before encountering each one—since you can’t redo the battle if they faint or slip away. The easiest way to catch them is with a Master Ball, but if you want to save it for other legendaries like Mewtwo, you’ll need to keep trying with Poke Balls.

Bring Pokémon that can help weaken or status their opponents. They all appear at level 50, so having Pokémon a few levels higher is ideal. Recommended Pokémon include those with moves to paralyze, such as Jolteon or Raichu using Thunder Wave, which is preferable over sleep moves because paralysis cannot be cured naturally. For Moltres, having Ninetales or Arcanine with Flash Fire can be helpful since it boosts fire attacks and makes them immune to fire damage. Articuno benefits from using Pokémon like Lapras, which resist Ice Beams, and tanky Pokémon like Snorlax to stay alive during ball throws. For Zapdos, bringing a Pokémon capable of paralysis and a tanky Electric-resistant Pokémon like Golem will improve your chances.

| Legendary | Recommended Pokémon |
| — | — |
| Moltres | Ninetales (LG exclusive) or Arcanine (with Flash Fire), plus Jolteon or Raichu with Thunder Wave |
| Articuno | Lapras (resists Ice Beam), plus Jolteon or Raichu with Thunder Wave, and tanky Pokémon like Snorlax |
| Zapdos | Jolteon or Raichu with Thunder Wave, plus Golem or Graveler for tanking Drill Peck |

To increase your chances, use Ultra Balls as much as possible. It’s wise to carry at least 50 to maximize your odds. Running low on Poke Balls means reloading your save—don’t leave to buy more, as that resets your progress. Once you’re ready, approach the Pokémon and start the battle. Paralyzing them first makes capturing easier, and then you should lower their HP into the red zone with a Pokémon resistant to their attacks.

It’s important to remember that catching these Pokémon can take dozens of throws—possibly nearly 100 or more—unless luck is on your side. Patience is key when hunting these legendary creatures.
