While there are many items you can buy at Poké Marts when you visit different cities in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, some of the best items, like no items ever were, can be obtained free of charge if you’re willing to explore a bit while wandering through Kanto.
Throughout your journey, you’ll find plenty of Potions and Poké Balls scattered around, but some hidden items nearby should be prioritized when you come across them. There’s a ton of valuable loot to discover while playing FireRed and LeafGreen!
How To Get Free Items
In Kanto, the first generation of Pokémon games was the pioneer in offering free items across the map for trainers who are curious enough to explore off the main paths. Keep an eye out for large Poké Balls resting on the ground or unusual spots on certain tiles—these often hide useful items. Also, some NPCs will trade rare items or give rewards if you help them complete your Pokédex as you progress through the Indigo League.
It’s important to gather everything you find during your exploration, whether to boost your Pokémon’s experience or to sell for cash. Your bag doesn’t have a strict limit, so collecting and reselling items like berries or hidden objects can give you an easy source of money for buying what’s not available for free.
While many freebies are Berries—an item mechanic introduced after Gen 1’s original release—it’s always worth grabbing whatever is laying around. Certain items like Nuggets, Pearls, Stardust, and Star Pieces are hidden throughout Kanto, often found by chance in the field. These can sell for a high price and help you farm cash easily, even if you don’t need them immediately.
Talk to NPCs whenever you reach a new area; they may offer useful items, Pokémon, or missions in exchange for the items, Pokémon, or progress you make in the game.
