Mega Evolutions are the main focus in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, but another special feature making a return is Alphas, originally seen in Pokémon Legends: Arceus. Alpha Pokémon are bigger than normal and offer several advantages. They are at a higher level, have three randomly selected perfect IVs, and maxed-out HP EVs. While catching an Alpha isn’t mandatory, it comes with notable benefits, though finding one of a specific Pokémon can be quite challenging.

Where to Find Alpha Pokémon

When looking for Alphas, there are two types of spawns: randomized and static. Randomized Alphas replace regular Pokémon in wild zones after you’ve completed the zone’s Pokédex by catching one of every Pokémon in that area. Once you’ve caught all Pokémon in a zone, a crown icon appears over the zone on your map, indicating that wild Alphas now have a 5% chance to spawn there. In certain conditions, wild spawning Alphas can also appear outside traditional zones, such as near water during rain or in sewers and Lysandre Labs, which behave like wild zones.

Finding these random spawns can take anywhere from five minutes to five hours, especially if the Pokémon only has a single spawn location. For a quicker approach, static spawns are available in certain areas, where the same Alpha Pokémon appears consistently, making shiny hunting much easier since you only need to focus on the shiny aspect. However, not all Pokémon have static spawns; for example, starter Pokémon in Wild Zone 20 only appear via the wild spawn method.

Several Pokémon appear as static Alphas in designated spots around Lumiose, such as:

  • Ampharos in Wild Zone 16, level 53, on a grassy patch north of the zone.
  • Arbok in Wild Zone 10, level 50, on a roof near sludge.

Note on spawns: Some Alpha Pokémon like Clefairy and Furfrou alternate between day and night, but they may sometimes not spawn at all.

Beyond wild zones, some rooftop Pokémon like Dratini have a chance of spawning as Alphas, especially in multiple locations across Lumiose. Always be alert during exploration, as discovering Alphas can happen unexpectedly.
