One of the best parts of Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is creating a team of specialized characters who excel in specific areas. In Chapter 4, you have a great opportunity to recruit many strong characters to help you achieve your goals.
One character that stands out is Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy 7. Recruiting him is the highlight of the side story in this chapter, and he’s a valuable addition. While bringing him into your team can be challenging, it’s definitely worth the effort.
How to Get Cloud
Getting Cloud requires completing all the side quests available in the game. These include:
- Defeating the Monk in Kenjutsu Road
- Defeating the Dancer at the Sal Ghidos Gate
- Defeating the Mirage at the Abbey
- Winning the Duel at the Jylland House
- Clearing the Hidden Path at the Archades Expedition
After finishing these tasks, you can visit the Clockwork City of Goug for a cutscene where Cloud is summoned to the FFT world. However, he will run away immediately after appearing.
Next, go back to the Trade City of Sal Ghidos. If you’ve completed everything correctly, you will participate in a battle where your goal is to save Cloud from a group of brigands.
The fight is straightforward. Cloud will stay out of the enemy’s reach, keeping himself safe. You’ll start close enough to attack the brigands, making it easy to distract them from Cloud. It’s helpful to take along several healing characters—preferably ones with at least five movement, the Item skill, and Throw Items support—to keep everyone alive.
Unlike story battles, the enemies scale to your party’s average level. Because of this, it’s wise to bring your strongest units with high damage and durability to make sure the fight is quick and easy.
Once you’ve defeated the brigands, you’ll be able to recruit Cloud into your team.
How to Get the Materia Blade
Cloud begins the game with the Materia Blade, a sword necessary for using Cloud’s special SOLDIER abilities. In earlier versions of this game, players had to go to Mount Bervenia and search the volcano’s top with a Treasure Hunt skill to find it. Luckily, in this version, Cloud starts equipped with it right away.
Mount Bervenia is located southeast of Riovanes Castle. Don’t worry if you think you’ve missed something — this area doesn’t feature any story battles.
However, if you enter a random fight at Mount Bervenia and search the tile where the weapon was previously located, you will instead find the Materia Blade+, a stronger version of the original. This upgraded weapon has six extra attack points and increases Magic Attack by four points, making it one of the best weapons in the game for classes that rely on magic damage, including Cloud.
To find this, your Treasure Hunter must be able to Jump at least four times to reach the top corner of Mount Bervenia. The exact tile is at the mountain’s summit, in its northeastern corner.
