Slay the Spire 2 is now available in early access. Get ready to explore this challenging, rogue-like deck-building game and face off against all kinds of monsters blocking your way. The game features dozens of cards, many relics, five playable characters, various events, status effects, and other mechanics that you’ll need to learn and master.
One interesting mechanic in the game involves the Wax Relic offering from Tezcatara, an ancient entity. Here’s what you need to know about how this mechanic works, whether it’s worth pursuing, and when you’ll encounter the Wax Relic during your playthrough.
### How Wax Relics Work
The Wax Relic is a special offering you can choose when you meet Tezcatara at the beginning of Act 2. Whether you encounter Tezcatara depends on luck, as there are multiple Ancients you might meet instead. If you do get Tezcatara, they will present three options, one of which is called Toy Box, which grants you four Wax Relics.
Remember, Tezcatara offers different choices, so the Toy Box isn’t guaranteed every time. The Wax Relic mechanic only appears during your encounter with Tezcatara, not in other events or treasure chests.
### How To Get Wax Relics
The Wax Relic offering is available only at the start of Act 2, and it appears when you encounter Tezcatara. If you are lucky enough to face them, you’ll see three options, and choosing Toy Box will give you four Wax Relics. These relics can be a big help, especially early in Act 2.
### How Wax Relics Function
Unlike standard relics, Wax Relics are temporary. They only last for a limited number of fights before they melt away and disappear forever. Specifically, each of the four Wax Relics will melt after three battles. After twelve battles in total, all four will be gone if you started with Toy Box.
These relics won’t melt during non-combat activities, such as opening chests, visiting shops, or resting at rest sites. They are only affected by battle, so facing multiple unknown enemies in a row won’t cause their loss.
The order in which you choose your relics matters. The first relic you pick will be the first to melt after three fights, the second after four fights, and so on. For this reason, it’s best to pick the strongest relics that provide ongoing effects, especially those that give immediate benefits upon activation. Once their effect is used, losing them doesn’t impact your progress significantly.
### Tips for Using Wax Relics
Since the available Wax Relics are randomly offered, you can’t guarantee getting a specific one. However, most relics are generally useful across different characters and strategies. Having four extra relics from the start of Act 2 can give you a substantial boost, especially since the difficulty ramps up considerably in this act with tougher enemies and Elite fights.
Because many enemies hit harder at this stage, applying those relics early on can help swing battles in your favor. Always pick relics that grant you instant advantages first, as their effects can be used immediately and then safely melted away later.
### Final Thoughts
The Wax Relic mechanic introduces an interesting strategic element to the game. While the relics are temporary, they can provide crucial power boosts at the right moment. Be mindful of the order in which you select them to maximize their benefits before they melt away, and remember that their appearance is all about chance. Despite their fleeting nature, these relics can significantly improve your chances of survival and success in Act 2 and beyond.
