In The Sims, much of the gameplay revolves around everyday life: getting a job, making friends, and addressing various needs. However, there are moments when the game embraces the unusual. While The Sims 1 occasionally explored the strange and exciting, its final expansion really leaned into the mystical by introducing magic.
The Sims: Makin’ Magic enables your Sims to dabble in the supernatural with spells and charms. Each new household kicks off with a treasure trove of magical items to explore, but the game leaves it up to you to figure out how to make the most of these tools.
What’s Included in the Magic Kit?
Each new household is greeted by the Mystery Man, who leaves a special delivery on the doorstep: the MagiCo Magical Starter Kit. This kit contains:
- A Hole In The Ground
- A Magic Wand
- A Spellbound Wand Charger
- A Start Here Spellbook
- 35 MagiCoins
- A variety of spell ingredients
- A Truly Charming End Table
While the end table isn’t magical, it serves a purpose. You need it to place the wand charger.
Among the various spell ingredients found in the kit are:
- Toadstools
- Toad sweat
- Butter
When you open the box, most items will be left in your yard, but the spell ingredients, wand, and MagiCoins will remain in the box until taken out.
You can arrange the larger items in Buy or Build Mode, just like any other furniture.
How to Use the Magic Kit
Every item in the kit offers unique ways for your Sims to interact with Magic Town. The kit has multiple components, each designed to provide different magical experiences.
A Hole in the Ground
This item provides your Sim with a way to instantly travel to Magic Town without the usual taxi fare of 50 Simoleons. To use it, click on the hole and select Jump In. Your Sim will travel to Magic Town while saving their current lot, allowing you to choose which specific lot to visit.
Spellbound Wand Charger
The Spellbound Wand Charger is essential for any Sim wishing to practice magic. Without it, your wand serves no purpose. Your Sim will mix ingredients here to keep their wand charged.
To charge the wand, interact with the charger three times to input all your ingredients. Once it’s loaded, a new option will appear. Select it and choose Charge Wand.
If you forget what ingredients you’ve added, click the charger to use the Read Label option to remind you what’s inside.
The Wand
A Sim needs a wand to practice spellcraft. To get the wand from the kit, click on the open box and choose Add to Inventory. A menu will pop up showing the contents, from which you can select the wand. Remember, you’ll need the Spellbound Wand Charger to use the wand effectively.
The ingredients you collected are crucial; they must be added to the charger for the wand to be charged. When the wand is charged, you can cast spells by clicking another Sim or an object and selecting the Cast option.
Be prepared for your Sim to pucker up if they use the Toadification spell, whether it’s on someone special or not.
Start Here Spellbook
This high-tech spellbook is a crucial resource for any Sim eager to learn magic. It offers information about key features of the expansion, such as MagiCoins and magical vendors, while also keeping a record of spells.
When you look up spells, it provides details on ingredient combinations required for casting. However, to fully understand what spells can do, your Sims will need to conduct their own experiments.
As they try out various recipes, the spellbook fills itself with information, making it easy to track progress while offering ideas for new spells, so you’re not continually wasting ingredients.
Spell Ingredients
The kit comes with ingredients for the Toadification spell, which can temporarily transform any target into a toad. Add these ingredients to the Spellbound Wand Charger to create the spell.
These ingredients can be used for other spells; for instance, butter and toadstools are part of the Enchant spell, while hypnotizing requires butter and toad sweat.
To add the spell ingredients and wand to your inventory, click the box and select Add to Inventory. You’ll see a list of everything in the box, and after selecting the items, they’ll be stored in your Sim’s inventory under Magic Items.
This kit is intended to give your Sims an introductory taste of magic before they venture to Magic Town to collect more supplies. While turning Bob Newbie into a toad might not be essential, it’s certainly amusing.
Different spells and charms are available for children and adult Sims.
Should I Sell the Magic Kit?
If you’re looking to dive into magic in The Sims, holding onto the kit is a smart choice. It provides a solid foundation for your magical pursuits without any initial cost.
However, if magic isn’t your focus, consider that the kit can fetch a decent price in Simoleons, especially early on when funds can be tight. If you don’t intend to engage with the magical elements, selling it is a reasonable choice.
Even if you’re unsure about diving into spellcasting, keep an eye on the spells available – some can be quite practical. Spells like Get Happy, Smiley Face, and Enchant are particularly beneficial:
Spell Name |
Effects |
Get Happy |
Boosts a Sim’s mood |
Smiley Face |
Turns the target into a friend |
Enchant |
Brings household items to life for assistance with household tasks |
Managing the needs of your Sims, keeping them happy, and building friendships can be a challenge in the game. So, having a little bit of magical assistance can be very beneficial. The decision of whether this help outweighs the value of selling the kit is up to you.
Watch out! Spells can sometimes backfire, which can lead to unforeseen outcomes, making the gameplay even more entertaining.
How Much Can I Sell the Magic Kit For?
You can sell the items from the MagiCo Magical Starter Kit in Buy or Build Mode at the following prices:
Item Name |
Price (Simoleons) |
Hole In The Ground |
89 |
Spellbound Wand Charger |
129 |
Start Here Spellbook |
149 |
Truly Charming End Table |
205 |
Total |
572 |
If you’re short on funds, consider selling the end table, regardless of your plans for the rest of the magical items. You can always find a less expensive table for the wand charger, or you may already have a suitable space in your home.
One note: The box itself can’t be sold in Buy Mode. If you delete it, it gets disposed of, so make sure to retrieve any smaller items before you do so to avoid losing them as well.
If your Sim keeps the smaller items from the kit, they may find them useful later, especially since you rarely need to access inventory in The Sims.
