Barrow-Dyad: An Exciting New Exotic in Destiny 2’s Episode: Heresy

Barrow-Dyad is the latest exotic weapon introduced in Episode: Heresy for Destiny 2, and it’s definitely a thrilling addition. Its unique disc shape stands out, and it serves as an intriguing Strand exotic, especially for players like me who are still on the hunt for Salvation’s Edge exotic, Euphony. While the quest to unlock this new weapon can be somewhat intricate, it remains an engaging experience.

The Barrow-Dyad catalyst comes with several shapeable options. You can choose among Target Lock, Hatchling, One for All, and High-Impact Reserves. High-Impact Reserves is the first to become available, followed by the others in the order listed at the Shaping Slab.

Unlocking Barrow-Dyad

An Overwhelming Number of Steps, But Manageable

Without diving too deep into the details of the Barrow-Dyad unlock quest, there are nine steps to complete in order to claim this weapon. You’ll find it hidden behind a unique interaction in the Nether, but once you initiate the quest, following it is relatively straightforward. Here’s how to get started:

  1. Head into the Nether and keep reloading until you come across a strangely placed Taken Blight in one of the rooms. Enter this Blight and solve the puzzle by stepping off the plate in the direction specified on the left side of the screen.
  2. Return to Sloane to receive the Exotic Quest titled "The Taken Path."
  3. Explore the Veles Labyrinth Lost Sector in the Cosmodrome and the K1 Revelation Lost Sector in Sorrow’s Harbor on the Moon to collect Taken Osseus Fragments after completing similar plate puzzles.
  4. Make your way back to Sloane.
  5. Follow the quest instructions to break three Taken curses.
  6. Return to Sloane once again.
  7. Locate three Hive statues in the Nether; activate them and defeat the miniboss that appears to obtain three more Osseus Fragments.
  8. Head back to Sloane.
  9. Launch and complete the "Derealize" Exotic quest.

After completing the exotic quest, you’ll acquire Barrow-Dyad along with the "Dyadic Ascension" quest, which unlocks the weapon’s intrinsic perk upgrades. As with all exotic upgrades, it requires some grinding and treasure hunting, but it’s worth it to enhance Barrow-Dyad’s capabilities. The first step in this quest is straightforward, but expect the complexity to increase.

"Dyadic Ascension" Exotic Quest Walkthrough

Unlocking All Three Current Intrinsic Upgrades

For the initial stage of the Dyadic Ascension quest, you must reach reputation rank five with the Shaping Slab, which should be fairly easy. The next step requires you to attain rank nine, which, while a bit tougher, can be achieved by making some solid runs in the Nether. You might find it a bit routine, but you can complete story quests simultaneously if you wish.

Steps two and four of the "Dyadic Ascension" quest will ask you to gather 12 more Taken Osseus Fragments. You can find these scattered throughout the Nether, with your Ghost providing hints on their locations. They are similar to the ones collected during "The Taken Path" quest, so keep an eye out for what my fireteam and I dubbed "crunchy Ghosts" during your runs.

While you’re at it, don’t forget to look for any Metastasized Essentia, which you can exchange for additional rewards in the Court of Blades or at Eris’ apartment.

After gathering enough Taken Osseus Fragments, you’ll unlock Panic Response II and III—upgrades for Barrow-Dyad’s intrinsic trait. These can be applied at the Shaping Slab in the Enclave on Mars, permanently boosting your Barrow-Dyad, regardless of your catalyst status.

Once you’ve collected all the fragments, you’ll need to acquire the "Moment of Clarity" perk from the Slab in Eris’ apartment, which requires you to reach reputation rank 12. Afterward, you’re tasked with finding six additional Taken Osseus Fragments.

There are six fragments located in each load zone of the Nether, so be vigilant for any you may have missed. After locating all 18 Taken Osseus Fragments, you’ll face the challenge of running the Nether on Expert difficulty. Completing this will grant you quest completion and Panic Response IV—the final intrinsic upgrade for Barrow-Dyad in Act 2.

Unlocking the Barrow-Dyad Catalysts

Just Like the Original Quests, There Are Secrets Here

To unlock the Barrow-Dyad catalyst quest, you’ll need to successfully complete an Expert run of Court of Blades with the weapon equipped. This will trigger the "A Needle’s Path" quest, requiring you to tackle another Court of Blades using only precision weapons, along with Barrow-Dyad itself. Your loadout will need to include:

  • Scout rifles
  • Linear fusion rifles
  • Sniper rifles
  • Barrow-Dyad

Once you finish a Court of Blades session with this specific setup, you’ll obtain the High-Impact Reserves Catalyst for Barrow-Dyad. It appears that the other catalysts—Hatchling, One for All, and Target Lock—will be released at a later date, likely coinciding with Act 3 of Heresy.

To switch to Barrow-Dyad’s secondary perk, activate the Path of Ambition at the Resonance Slab in Eris’ apartment. This requires you to retrieve a worm from the Hall of Souls in the Nether and complete the associated quest, which is located beyond the hallway where you obtain new upgrades during the Court of Blades.

With just a couple of weeks left until the next phase of content drops, you won’t have to wait long to unlock more catalysts for Barrow-Dyad. Whether the new SMG has entered your Destiny 2 loadout or not, completing the catalyst quests is yet another step toward wrapping up Episode: Heresy.
