Pokémon Legends: Z-A once again challenges players to find rare stones, but true to the Pokémon style, not all stones serve the same purpose. While there are the familiar evolution stones (a staple since the original games), this game also features individual Mega stones, which became an important mechanic in later Pokémon titles.
After selecting your starter Pokémon, your next goal is to catch as many Pokémon as possible. Gengar makes a return this time, and it can Mega Evolve into Mega Gengar. You’ll need to progress a bit through the story to find one, but once you do, the journey becomes much easier.
How to Get Gengar in Pokémon Legends: Z-A
Trading Haunter Again
The traditional method involves finding a Gastly early in the game. Gastly can be found in Wild Zone 4, which is accessible near the start of your adventure. You’ll spot it in the northern part of Lumiose City. Catch one and level it up to evolve into Haunter.
(Remember, Gengar evolves from Haunter at level 25. If your Haunter is already at or above level 25, just level it up once more and then finalize the evolution in the Pokémon menu.)
Once you have a Haunter, you’ll need to trade it to someone else to get it to evolve into Gengar. Alternatively, you can get a Haunter as a gift from someone, which will then automatically evolve into Gengar when traded back. The final step is obtaining the Gengarite stone for Mega Evolution.
How to Get Gengar Without Trading
You can also catch Gengar directly during the storyline. When your team reaches around level 42 in the D-rank part of the game (during Main Mission 20), Gengar appears naturally as part of the story. You can catch it during the quest called “A Request From The Rust Syndicate,” specifically inside a rundown old building, thus skipping the need for trading.
Where to Find Gengarite for Mega Gengar
To Mega Evolve Gengar, you’ll need the Gengarite stone. You can purchase it from the Stone Emporium located on Vernal Avenue. Fans of past Pokémon games might remember this shop from Pokémon X and Y, where similar stones were sold.
Since most of the game takes place in Lumiose City, it’s easier to get accustomed to the environment rather than navigating an open world like in other regions. The game offers plenty of hidden details and many Mega Evolutions to discover, making for an exciting experience.
