Just like previous games in the series, Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined often places items in your path that you can’t reach just yet. These are mainly locked chests scattered throughout its large world, even in the early parts of the game.
You probably already guessed that you need a key to open these chests and get their treasures. But the game doesn’t tell you where to find these keys or when you’ll get them. Here’s what you should know about the different keys in Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined and how to use them to open locked chests.
How to Open Locked Chests
You Need a Key
There isn’t just one key for all the chests. Instead, there are four special keys to find as you go through the game. These are:
- Thief’s Key
- Bandit’s Key
- Magic Key
- Ultimate Key
You’ll find all four keys in order, but it takes some effort to find them. Each key opens up a new group of chests, offering more valuable treasures. Luckily, all the keys are found in open areas, so you never need a key to keep going with the main story.
Once you’ve got a key, you don’t have to go back to open all previously missed chests. The game will naturally take you past most of them later on.
How to Get the Thief’s Key
Location: Pilgrim’s Perdition (Past)
The first key is the Thief’s Key, which you find in the past version of Pilgrim’s Perdition. But you can’t get it right away. You’ll need to complete the Alltrades Abbey quest and unlock the vocation switching feature first.
After finishing the story in that area and bringing Jacqueline back to Alltrades Abbey, the town will mostly empty out. Before you return to the present, go back to Pilgrim’s Perdition and find the boarding house on the north side. Check the chests behind the counter inside to find the Thief’s Key.
How to Get the Bandit’s Key
Location: Bandits’ Base (Present)
You can get this key pretty quickly. Use the teleportal to return to the present and travel to a new island that just appeared. Explore until you find the Bandits’ Base, a new location. Watch the cutscene, then use the password “Get lost!” to enter.
Inside, go to the main quest marker at the back of the cave. You’ll face a short boss fight against The Mighty Pip. After winning, he’ll give you the Bandits’ Key.
How to Get the Magic Key
Location: Palazzo di Bulgio (Present)
Later in the game, after finishing the Hardlypool scene and getting the Mermaid Moon, return to La Bravoure in the present. Completing this story awards you a Flying Carpet, allowing you to reach new areas, including one in the L’Arca region.
Fly over to L’Arca and cross the water to the Palazzo di Bulgio. Enter the building, and go up to the third floor. You’ll find the Magic Key in a chest beside some wardrobes.
How to Get the Ultimate Key
Location: Cathedral of Light Basement
As you head toward the final boss and explore the Cathedral of Light, you can find the last key, the Ultimate Key, in the basement. This key can open any chest in the game, even ones needing other keys.
If you missed the previous keys, you can wait until the end of the game to get the Ultimate Key and open all locked chests. But many of the treasures are valuable equipment, so it’s a good idea to try to find these keys earlier in the game.
