The Psychic or Ghost-type Hoopa is a Legendary Pokémon featured in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. It plays a key role in the story of the Mega Dimension DLC, where it acts as a companion to the character Ansha. However, players can also catch a second Hoopa for themselves. This other Hoopa isn’t available until after finishing the main story of the DLC, but it can be a strong addition to your team.
In this game, Hoopa is used to open portals to the Hyperspace Wild Zones by feeding it donuts. Ansha’s Hoopa can help you access a special version of Lumiose City, but you need to make donuts that match the star level of the rifts you encounter there. Donuts are made using Hyperspace Berries, so gathering plenty of these ingredients is important.
How to Find an Alternate Hoopa in the Mega Dimension DLC
You can start a final story quest by baking the right donut. After completing the main story, visit Ansha at Hotel Z during the DLC’s postgame to begin a side mission called “The Djinn Unbound.” In this mission, Ansha’s Hoopa is frightened due to a strange distortion.
Accepting the quest gives you a special item called the Prison Bottle, which is essential for capturing the Hoopa. The distortion event takes place in Bleu Sector 6, just above the Bleu Street Pokémon Center. The rift there is marked with a 5-Star difficulty level, indicating the star value your donut needs to match.
Make enough Hyperspace Berries to craft a 5-Star donut. As long as your donut matches the rift’s star level, you can enter through the Hyperspace Lumiose route. Once you reach the Blue District with the correct donut, Ansha’s Hoopa will teleport you through the rift.
When you step into this space, you’ll face a large Unbound Hoopa that will attack immediately. This is the alternate version of Hoopa you’re seeking. However, it’s not as helpful as Ansha’s Hoopa inside the DLC.
How to Capture Hoopa in Legends: Z-A
To catch this Hoopa, you need to defeat the Unbound Hoopa in battle. Be prepared for a tough fight — this Hoopa is at Level 200 and fights like a rogue Mega Evolution. It may take several tries, so bring a strong team.
A good Pokémon choice for this battle is Mega Absol Z, which has Dark-type moves that deal four times normal damage to Hoopa. Once you defeat it, use the Prison Bottle to seal its power, turning it into a restrained version like the one that helped Ansha in the DLC. After sealing its power and calming it down, the Hoopa will agree to join you.
Next, return to Ansha to complete the quest. Both her Hoopa and yours will meet and help ease each other’s worries. You can keep the Prison Bottle to hold your Hoopa in its Confined Form or remove it to return it to its Unbound state. Each form is powerful in its own way, making this quest especially valuable for competitive players who have completed the Mega Dimension DLC.
