Chapter 1 of Deltarune introduces a hidden boss that you may not have encountered during your initial playthrough. As Toby Fox, the creator of both Undertale and Deltarune, continues to develop new chapters, it’s likely that you haven’t uncovered all the secrets within the current ones. One notable secret is Jevil, positioned as one of the game’s toughest challenges early on.

While you eagerly await upcoming chapters of Deltarune, you can hunt down and confront Jevil, alongside other secret bosses available in the new Dark Worlds. But first, you’ll need to locate him. Jevil is tucked away inside the Castle, the final area of Chapter 1, and you’ll need several keys to access his door once your party is ready to take him on.

How to Access the Secret Boss in Deltarune Chapter 1

Collecting the Broken Keys to Rescue Jevil

After clearing the Castle Dungeon, head past the shop and take the elevator to the first floor. Proceed downwards and to the right to discover another elevator marked “????”, then descend. Once you exit the elevator, follow the path to discover a locked door. If you manage to open it, you’ll find Jevil in his boss chamber.

When you interact with the door while it’s locked, Jevil will directly address your party, revealing that one key is essential to unlock the way to him. Just like other hidden bosses in Deltarune, you’ll need to follow a series of steps to obtain this key, which is fragmented into three separate pieces.

Below is a table detailing where to find each piece of the key, including who to talk to and which locations to revisit:

Jevil Key Piece

How to Find

Key Piece #1

Talk to Seam, the shopkeeper located in the field. Select the “Strange Prisoner” dialogue option to obtain the Broken Key item.

Key Piece #2

Fast-travel to the Bake Sale and go left. Pass the area where two Bloxers are located, continuing until you reach a room with black and white dancers blocking the path ahead. Head south until it appears that Kris is walking on air. Follow this secret path until you encounter Rabbicks to battle; the Key Piece is found at the end of this path.

Key Piece #3

Go to the Field and move right until you arrive at the earlier puzzle. Set the combination to Diamond, Heart, Clover, and Spade to activate a mechanism that will yield the last Key Piece.

Once you have all the pieces, you’ll need to repair the Broken Key. To do this, return to the Bake Sale and navigate north to find Smith Malius, who will notice the broken pieces in your inventory and offer to fix them.

Throughout the process, the game will provide hints after you acquire the Broken Key, the first necessary piece to access Jevil’s prison. These clues should help direct you toward the other broken pieces, so try to minimize encounters with adversaries to expedite the process.

With your repaired key, you’re now set to face Jevil. Before diving into battle, ensure you’ve stocked up on healing items at the shop. Return to the elevator with the question marks and approach the gate to initiate the fight with Deltarune’s secret boss.

How to Conquer the Secret Boss in Deltarune Chapter 1

Quick Projectiles and Strong Defense Stats

Much like other encounters in Undertale and Deltarune, you have two choices for this battle: a passive approach or a more aggressive one. The choice is yours, depending on your playstyle. Be warned, however—this battle is one of the most challenging in Chapter 1, which requires you to master Jevil’s attack patterns and effectively dodge his moves.

It’s advisable to enter this battle with a good stock of healing items to keep your whole team alive since many of Jevil’s attacks can be quite damaging and difficult to avoid. Additionally, it helps to have well-rounded members with strong Defense stats.

Fortunately, most of Jevil’s attacks are indicated by text prompts, which make it easier to anticipate his next moves. The table below outlines specific dialogues that signify what action Jevil will take and how to counter it. With some practice, you’ll get the hang of dodging his moves, which will start in a predictable order before becoming random as the fight progresses.

Dialogue

Jevil’s Action & Counterstrategies

“Catch me if you can.”

Jevil teleports around the screen, throwing spades at high speed. Stay alert and move carefully to bypass them.

“Having fun yet? Join the club.”

Clubs will rush in from both sides of the screen. Remain vigilant to avoid getting hit.

“Let’s make the Devilsknife.”

The Devil’s Knife will appear in a square. To evade it, move to the center of the screen, switching between the edge and center.

“Let’s ride the carousel game.”

Horses will traverse diagonally across the screen. Just steer clear of the corners to avoid this move.

“My hearts go out to all the sinners.”

Four hearts will spin across the screen, moving towards you. Side-step as needed to evade their approach.

“Shall we play around?”

Jevil shoots spiraling spades at you. It’s crucial to dodge this attack from a safe distance to avoid damage.

Once you navigate through all of these phases, Jevil will enter his desperation mode. During this segment, all previous attacks will occur simultaneously at varying speeds. The battle box will vanish, and knives will descend from the top of the screen. This indicates that the end of the battle is near, allowing you to move freely outside the play area—great for dodging the incoming projectiles.

Defeating Jevil or forcing him to surrender yields different rewards based on your strategy. Regardless of how the battle concludes, Jevil will ultimately cast a grim prophecy on your party before vanishing.

Remember, you don’t have to complete the rest of the chapter to challenge this boss. Jevil becomes accessible anytime after you reach the Castle, allowing you to take him on whenever you’re ready. Moreover, with Chapters 3 and 4 recently launched, you can revisit Chapter 1 to tackle Jevil if you missed him earlier, along with any other lost content from previous segments of the story.

All Rewards for Defeating Jevil

Receive a Powerful Item Based on Your Battle Decisions

Deltarune Jevilstail reward item from beating Jevil boss in Chapter 1

Depending on your approach during the Jevil encounter, the rewards you earn will vary. Below is a list of the rewards you can obtain from defeating Jevil, along with the conditions you must meet:

Jevil Reward

Route Action

Item Stats & Effects

Jevilstail

Actions Only (Pascifist)

+2 AT, +2 DF, +2 Magic

Devilsknife

Battle Only (Violence)

+5 AT, +4 Magic, Buster TP Down

While the rewards for overcoming this challenge might seem modest, they can be carried over into Chapter 2 and beyond. For certain characters, these items will serve as their best equipment for the early parts of the game until you discover upgraded gear later.

I’m Pretty Sure I Know Who The Roaring Knight Is In Deltarune

The true identity of the Roaring Knight is a hot topic among Deltarune fans, and I believe most evidence points to one particular character.

Defeating Jevil will also earn you a Shadow Crystal. This enigmatic item is among the rarest in the game, appearing only with the secret bosses of each chapter, such as Spamton NEO in Chapter 2 and Gerson in Chapter 4. You can bring this crystal to Seam, who will remark that Shadow Crystals can be found with powerful beings, and even though it’s invisible, it casts a shadow.

Fortunately, Deltarune is now available on most modern consoles, allowing you to explore different playthroughs without needing multiple accounts. However, be aware that taking a more violent approach may affect your ending, regardless of when the next chapters are released. Until then, keep practicing to defeat Jevil in Deltarune.
