If you’re just starting out, you might be curious about how turnips work in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. If you’ve played before, you already know that every Sunday, most players focus on this item because of Daisy Mae, a new NPC. These turnips aren’t grown on farms; instead, they act like a kind of stock market – often called the Stalk Market in the game.

On Sundays, you buy turnips at a fixed price, then try to sell them later in the week for a profit. Each day, you visit Nook’s Cranny and hear what the Nook family is offering for your turnips. The price changes daily, so it’s up to you to decide the best time to sell—or, like me, to visit a friend’s island when I hear the prices are good. Here’s everything you need to know about turnips in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Where to buy turnips in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

You can purchase turnips from Daisy Mae, a new NPC who has taken over the job from her grandma, Joan, and now manages the Stalk Market. She arrives on your island every Sunday morning between 5 a.m. and noon. Turnips are sold in bundles of ten. Remember how much you paid because that info is key when trying to make a profit during the week.

If you don’t sell your turnips by the following Sunday, they will rot and become worthless. Rotten turnips attract flies and ants, which can be seen on your bug list in the game.

How to sell turnips in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

You can sell turnips any day except Sunday at Nook’s Cranny. Just talk to Tommy and ask, “Turnip prices?” to see today’s rate. Interestingly, the Nook twins will give you two different prices each day—one before noon and one after. Each day, these prices are different, so you’ll want to guess which will be the highest to maximize your profit. Over the week, that adds up to 12 different buying prices, making it quite a game of chance.

It’s smart to check in with friends about their turnip prices too—you might find better deals elsewhere. You can also visit websites like turnip.exchange to compare rates and ensure you’re getting the best deal each week. And keep in mind, if you don’t sell by the next Sunday, your turnips will turn rotten and be worthless, so it’s best to try for a little profit rather than no profit at all.

Understanding turnip price patterns

The official game guide explains that turnip prices follow one of four weekly patterns:

  • Normal: Prices go up and down slightly but stay fairly steady.
  • Sudden Spike: Prices suddenly jump high at a random point in the week, then drop back down.
  • Gradual Decline: Prices never go above what you paid and steadily fall all week.
  • Gentle Spike: Prices rise somewhat at a random time but not as high as the Sudden Spike.

The guide also shows the odds of each pattern happening each week, helping players predict what might come next.

How turnip storage works

Turnips aren’t stored in your home’s inventory. You can leave them on the ground inside your house or around your island, but that’s about it. This design is likely to prevent players from forgetting about their turnips or wasting storage space. Sadly, you can’t plant turnips either—they’re strictly for selling. Also, if turnips are left lying around on your island, Isabelle will see them as trash, which hurts your island’s rating, so it’s best to keep them tidy.
